Message to all Macbook Pro owners

I now I have my MPC1k output hooked up digitally to my Macbook Pro
Maybe this is a commonly known fact??? - i googled alot and didnt find much
Did you know the mic and headfone sockets on MBPs double up as SPDIF optical minijack socket I/O??
Maybe Macbook too, I haven't checked.

all you need is a tiny £30/$50 box by M-Audio called CO2, a coaxial SPDIF cable and a toslink to optical mini
your rockin', no audio interface required for 2-channels digital!!
some people have an issue with spdif and say it sounds cold, brittle etc etc
I think it serves a purpose - sounds very clean

Very cool info here. I run on a Macbook Pro. I've experimenting with different recording styles recently. I've run my MPC-1000 through a NAD amp, a Mackie Mixer, and my amped Rane mixer. I've even tried running it through a tube amp for warmth. I've still not hit the quality of sound I am looking for. Maybe I am just asking for too much out of this thing? My MPC-1000 still sounds metallic and distant, even with considerable EQ'ing in Logic Pro. I may pick up one of these converters and see what I can come up with.

Run analog cables from the MPC into whatever, preferably w/o a sound card. It'll sound very unclean, promise. For instance, I've been recording direct in to my powerbook G4 from the MPC just using the main outs on the MPC into the 1/8" headphone jack of my powerbook. Some detectable hiss, nothing too major as far as I can tell. But maybe that's what you want.

I've never used SPDIF but am curious about it. After years of lo-fi'ing it, I might be ready for some cleaner sounds. Damn cables are like $25 though. Krikey!

Just enquiring about the M-Audio CO2. I recently brought a MPC1000 and im running it via my soundcard using cables.

How would the M-Audio CO2 benefit me sound wise?

I am also using cables via a mixingboard, then through an outboard high end soundcard. My point earlier is that even with analog cables, the beats sound distand and cold. I get them warmed up a bit in Logic with the sound staging suite, but it only does so much. I'd be interested in hearing a sample via this C02 if anyone has a wav to share.
