just to chip in a bit and give this issue a little different twist:

i, too, wish JJ would bring back some features he removed from OS 2XL. i think MIXER AUTOMATION and some of the QREAL functionality are two big ones that need to come back. i can even say i don't really care about compatibility. sure: compatability would be great! but if JJ can bring those missing features back... even if it's in a way that kills compatibility with previous OS's... i'll still be 100% satisfied.

now, you can say "just go back to OS 2", but... OS 2XL has waay too many great features in it to do that. i've only been using it a couple days but i can already see there is no going back. yes, it's still a great OS as it is... but to bring back those missing features would just take it to a whole new level for me. and some of those missing features... there really is NO workaround for those in the MPC. (don't say "DAW", Nym!!!)

one last point: i have personally received email from JJ on a couple occasions in response to a request of mine in which he said "this is not possible, sorry." then, 3 DAYS LATER, i get another email saying "your requested feature will be included in the next update"! sometimes, JJ just needs to rack his brains for a while and look at the problem from another perspective before realizing that there is a way to achieve the 'imposssible'. send your request and keep your fingers crossed.

Has any one bought a pair of Jordan's lately? Shi ts is getting expensive.

I realized one thing when I read what JJ placed in his announcement about OS2XL... that OS2XL will most likely not fair well with load or something like that of OS2 projects...(RTFM!!!) LOL! So its not an easy decision to switch and JJ new that. As long as I can go back and rock OS2... GREAT! I think that would be a truer disappointment... not being able to load older OS's...

Big up to Nym.

I see your points, homeboy.

T7... I don't. I can go back and rock OS2 at anytime... Will it be a task to remember what folders are OS2 or XL?? I'm just askin.

so true. and i agree that the code space is gone. if you want new features then somethings gotta go. and nobody's forcing anybody to upgrade. the 3 codes have different feature sets and we should all just find the one that fits our work flow and ride it till the wheels fall off. there are other sequencers out there and believe it or not. some do everything that os1, 2, and 2xl do all together. so if one of these isnt working for you. maybe the mpc1000 isnt for you.

I don't think T7 is looking for peace. Some people seem to enjoy starting arguments where they can hide through ananimity. If it dousn't interest you, use the older shyt...

T7, with a outlook after excellent sleep, i'm sorry about yesterday. let's try to keep unnecessary roughage out of these forums, especially now.

just give it time. i remember that you only recently switched from a 2000xl to the 2500, and if i'm correct, you either haven't used/only recently started using os2 for the 2500, and furthermore haven't used 2xl for the 2500 since it's not out yet.

you'll find that depending on how you make your music there will be no looking back to the 2000xl expect for nostalgia for simpler days.

I recently got a third party upgrade on my car...
They managed to improve my 5 speed gear box to a 7 speed and added an extra cup holder :D
To do this they removed the hand brake and now the radio can only get FM, no AM, but who cares? Right...?

I find it laughable how JJ destroys compatibility between versions. This is the reason why I remain on JJOS1.
As far as I can see, there is no plan. A new feature is introduced, something removed, format of PGM files changes again.
This is surely exemplified with JJOS2 and JJOS2XL incompatibilities.
I appreciate the sentiment of JJ, but I have a feeling the next version will again be incompatible.

JJ will see diminishing returns for each version.
Since JJ is removed from the hardware side of things he is doomed. Always having to try and cram into the code space. If there was an equivalent hardware guru, there could be upgrades to the flash size, etc which would save taking a scalpel to the code and removing chunks.

I seriously think that if the OS went open source it would be much better for everyone, but that would remove any income the JJ is enjoying, so won't ever happen. I don't think he is particularly generous for doing what he is doing. He gets money from us. I know Akai are a bunch of w@nkers, but JJ is no knight in shining armour, he saw a way to make some money and took it. He didn't leak the source code onto a bit torrent with a PDF of the MPC circuits and let anyone have a bash.

The future is going to be open sourced. Take a look at http://ucapps.de/ for a taster.
The actual MPC hardware itself is nothing special. Some of the people here have seen the guts and know that it's a very basic embedded computer, which is NOTHING special in this day and age.
Perhaps Dave and Roger can wow everyones socks off with their new box http://www.davesmithinstruments.com/products/linndrum2/ ???

I would like to say thanks to JJ for doing JJOS1, which fixed the Akai OS and made the MPC1k a decent product. I think he should give up now. Get a proper job, or do something different. Either that or sit down, take the time to establish a way to make the MPC1000 better WITHOUT cutting bits, making things incompatible and causing hassle. If he isn't up to the task, open up the code base and let someone else do it. With the whole world able to tweak the platform, I'm sure a third party flash memory upgrade would appear rapidly, along with a new OS to utilise the extra space.

7 speed? wow sounds like some sort of ferrari or something.

are you dave gahan?

i totally agree with you. open source is the way to go. who can reverse engineer it?

if there is a next version, and it is incompatible yet still an improvement over the old, i will adopt it and my flexibility will continue to improve as a result

not a song lost along the way

"there will be no looking back to the 2000xl expect for nostalgia for simpler days."

Very true. I came from the XL, copped the 2500, and hated it at first, but then after a while, I got used to it.. the akai OS basically sucks, but JJ made a lot of things better. Saying that T7, I agree with both you and Nym. I have OS2 installed on my 2500, and still use OS-1. I'll probably buy the OS2XL upgrade and still use version 1. Why? Because I like the fact that JJ is working hard to make my MPC more efficient. He could have waited until today to simply release this new OS and save us all a lot of trouble form constantly upgrading, but in all honesty, I'm kinda honored to be involved in the whole experience; it was the main reason I kept coming back to this site, just to see if JJ uploaded a new version! Can you imagine Roger Linn doing the same with the MPC3000? That would have been dope! But anyways, I feel both of ya, but just enjoy the fact that you have the option to upgrade, or not to upgrade, and thank whoever you prey to that your 1000/2500's OS isn't akai's responsibility to fix!
PS. When you get used to the JJ os, your XL will collect dust! I don't even use mine anymore!

this is my dream. someone who can upgrade the MPC hardware (i'm talking the CPU) as well as JJ has been upgrading the software.

faster processor, more polyphony, better FX, midi CC control of ALL parameters... all of that could come true with a new CPU.
By dtaa pla muk Thu Dec 25, 2008 3:28 am
well, new CPU and the new dedicated OS that'd have to come with it
assembling both (before sales, no less) would be enormously expensive for the manufacturer. well beyond the resources of anyone currently interested in the 1k, besides akai, and they have zero reason to want to do that (would cripple sales of the 5000)

well, i'm definitely not suggesting a new CPU be manufactured from scratch. that is definitely not going to happen.

i'm thinking more along the lines of something hacked together. if i recall correctly, the MPC 1000 CPU is just a cell phone CPU, isn't that correct? i'm thinking that someone with the appropriate knowledge find a source for a similar, but more powerful CPU that has already been made. most likely the chip will be a few years old. maybe someone finds a source for a chip in which too many were manufactured and they're just sitting in a warehouse somewhere collecting dust. they would be able to purchase a bulk amount of these for very cheap. it would be a matter of having the technical chops to remove the old chip & put the new one in, and then having a programmer who knew how to code for the chip (i'm sure JJ would be able to learn how to do this if he doesn't already know. especially if it was a similar chip to what the MPC currently uses).

someone recently found an alternate source for different color LCD's for the MPC's, right? CPU's would be harder but not impossible, i think. just a matter of knowledge, desire, & luck, i suppose.

This really doesn't sound that crazy... Of coarse I'm a very ignorant person whenit comes to electronics. Sure would be amazing though.
