hello again. please spare me, ive been using this machine for a couple of weeks now, but i feel a little disheartened...

i've sampled alot of records, and i'm tryin to make straight hip hop music...

but no matter how much i try i can nevrer get my drums sounding right... i've tried messin with the timing correct and timing sig and stuff, but to no avail. is there somethign i'm not doing right? even with the quantize off, getting the beats to loop properly is a nightmare.

anybody got any tips on how they lay out their sequnces? i will be very thankful for any help, i don't wanna get rid of this machine! i swore i wouldn't have myself comin on here tryin to blag help so i've studied the anual religiously but it ain't helping me. last resort, homies. peace.

if ur just worried about a loop ...start small ....1/8 Tc 2- bar loop .....hihat , then snare , the kick. hit the kick 1 time every 2 bars just to double check it....put ur BPM in the neighborhood of 84-89....

Listen to ur favorite songs , and emulate the kicks and snares., for the double kick in the begining of a loop i turn off quantize . but then again , i quantize everything but the hat and kick .

don't give up! if anything comes easy, you're getting hustled.

i've been struggling with this same thing for a while and made some progress tonight.

this example is mad simple, but it let me get my head around a few things. i kept saying in my head "boom, bap, boom, boom bap" or whatever pattern i was trying to come with. sounds funny, but it helped a lot.

my sequence was set up like this:

TC: 1/16
BARS: 2
BPM: 89.0
TRACKS: 2 (1 kick track and 1 snare track)

i used GRID EDIT to lay out my hits. i'm a graphic person and have to see things diagrammed to get a better understanding. however, you can use STEP EDIT which is also pretty powerful.

KICKS (the boom)

001.01.00
001.01.24
001.02.00 SNARE (the bap)
001.02.72
001.03.48
001.04.00
002.01.24
002.01.48
002.02.00
002.02.72
002.03.00
002.03.24
002.03.48
002.04.00

the snares are hitting every other beat (2 times per bar).

try going back and forth between GRID and STEP edit to see the relation of hits to each other. as a learning exercise, it helps to keep all your hits on the same track, though from a production standpoint you would probably want to put each type of hit on a separate track.

good luck.

peace.

USE GOOD DRUM SOUNDS TO START WITH.

Get to know your TC

If you like the feel of say Primo or Cutmaster Kirk go 16t

If you like Timbos drum feel go to 32

If you like that down south stuff go 16 no swing..

I usually lay my hi hats first to get a timing going... Sort of like the metronome but I find it more easy to go by that...
Then I lay my sample and kind of listen to different kicks and snares to see which one fits in good with the samples then If the hi hats are sounding crazy I just look for a different hi hat. and play them out to the sample. afterwards just mute the sample and listen to the Kicks, Hihats, Snare to see if they are on point and if they arent just fix em...
Takes time to master the drum game. But just enjoy the process and if things get out of touch save the project and go back to it later. Never stay stuck for long because it makes it frustrating. Another thing I like to do is imagine the track
before doing it....

Good Luck

mpc's have a learning curve when it comes to timing those drums. it took me a while to get it so you are not by yourself . 1 tip is to start slow like at 80 bpm or even slower and listen to the metronome <sp> (timing)
