well first of all, can you make sure you're getting sound out of the mpc1000 before connecting it to anything else. Load up a sample or two and play it - check the volume -check your headphones, and check when you sample - you can see the 'bars' showing input on the mpc display.
remember if you are new to the mpc 1000 you may need to give the pads a harder 'tap' then you'd first think (you need to break them in - and a lot has been said about how the 1000 pads are a bit tougher than other mpcs, you can get replacement ones)
are you sure you don't need some sort of amplifier between the 2, also ensure that the out is going into the in on the mpc.
if the cords are good - then maybe you need something in between.
