I am trying...I haven't done this in years. I just realize that I bought a whole ham and not a half. So, with my late start..it won't be done until 5 PM  Dab, enjoy the holidays. This forum is about to have all sorts of activity with the release of some new music production products and improvements on existing ones in Jan!

...of course you will hear from me before...despite what is ahead, you will still be able to create music with the 4K.....but I am done with the 4K talk until after Akai and Roland show what they have been up in just a few weeks  :P

Happy Holidays to you too. I'll be curious to hear what type of stuff you will make up in the New Year...

what you seem to miss, jahrome, is that with a 4k you can have almost all the job done IN THE BOX!! by the way, i just sold mine , so im not that much partisan by givin my impressions, given that im now producing with a laptop.

but, i have done quite a few complete tracks (not hip hop, but some sort of digital folk music, lots of instruments, like 10 different instruments) all in the box (with just a touch of post production and external fx here and there).

i think the mpc4000 is one of the only pieces of hardware (not only among mpc's) capable of doing that, and with rubber pads :D

not talkin about the amount of 1and a half hour livesets ive done with only mpc4k and a micromodular (that wasnt necessary but fun).

i dont think anyone can do the same with any other mpc.
it takes a laptop, or a keyboard workstation.

recently i saw mpc 5000 used for 1400 now there is new on ebay with warranty for 1700 but 4k plus stays around 1400 mint so i don't know. One is new other one is old so you can speculate all day which is better and both machines have bugs and there will be no more updates for 4k.I think its best to go with what feels better to individuals and not to worry too much about small things that don't make too much of a difference. At a end of the day equipment plays only one part in your music production rest of it is up to you.

I just found an MPC 4000 for $1400 today...the original white one with 8 output board. I also found a Z4 zampler with 80gig hard drive for $500. The prices of these items are going to drop in two weeks....

Back to the MPC 4000 and 5000...

Sequencer tracks:
1. The MPC 4000 has 128 tracks per sequence (twice as many as the MPC 5000). Can the MPC 4K create/load 128 programs and assign one to each track? The manual isn't very clear.
2. The MPC 5000 has 64 sequencer tracks and 8 hard disk tracks.

Timing Correct:
1. The MPC 4000 has the typical MPC swing parameters. Note values are 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, and 1/64 as well as triplets for each.
2. The MPC 5000 adds strength and Window parameters to swing. It has the same note values as the MPC 4000 with the addition of 1/4 and 1/4 triplets. It also allows you to add swing triplets.

Chop Shop:
1. MPC 4000 can slice samples into 32 regions and create a program. It can create a sequence to play back the sliced samples.
2. MPC 5000 can slice samples into 64 regions and create a program. It also has Recycle style auto chop. In stead of creating a sequence from sliced samples, it creates a Patched Phrase which contains the MIDI data to play back the samples. It is automatically sync'd to tempo. You can assign multiple patched phrases to each track.

Audio:
1. The MPC 4000 is a 16 and 24 bit samplers. It supports 44.1khz and higher samples
2. The MPC 5000 supports 16 bit / 44.1khz sampler. It can import samples at 24 bit and sample rates from 44.1khz and higher. It can also export 24 bit audio tracks.

Recording:
1. MPC 4000 can record from ADAT input if the expansion board is installed.
2. MPC 5000 can use individual outputs as a recording source.

Thank you for all the contributions to this thread. It's been very enlightening for the most part. I'm searching for new mediums to sequence and sample with and I've been considering my options very carefully.

1: Yes, you can even assign 2 of the programs in 1 multi to 1 track.

The MPC 5000 is compatible with most of the older audio workstations produced by Akai, like the MPC 1000, 2000, and, or course, the 4000. The MPC 4000 has additional compatibility with non-Akai workstations, particularly those made by Roland and EMU.

The 4k w/ 1.7 never loaded my EMU Formula 4000 CD Roms correctly.
Some of the EW CD Roms that are S1k in the S1k/S3k format also never loaded correctly.
Eventually realised it was easier to just load them in the ESI2000 and be done or resample into the 4k.

How did the Roland library stuff workout, or has anybody gone through that yet?
