Forum to discuss all matters relating to the MPC1000 and MPC2500 operating systems created by 'JJ' (all versions).

Why is it no one seems to complain about the disconnect that every new JJ OS makes to work done on the previous OS?
It's fully understood that he is making dramatic changes to the feature set each time but still he should be able to have much better compatibility to the stuff created on the previous OS.

I mean complain to JJ.
Also JJ has giving an incredible feature set but it still lacks that refined feel.
The problem we now face is it seems to move to a new OS instead of cleaning things up.
I love a lot about XL but it feels even more hacked than before, features feel a bit forced.

nothing feels more "hacked" than the original os
os1 1.99i is a hell of a lot more refined than akai os 2.11
os2 1.22 is a hell of a lot more refined than os1 1.99i
os2xl is new

cycle goes on and on - everyone gets all panicky when a new os is released, forgetting that it all works out

i just do not get how anything feels "forced." all i know is that there a bunch of nitpicks and bugs that need to (and will) get worked out and that if folks feel flustered they just need to breathe and/or downgrade while the rest of us help to sort things out

pretty much verbatim what i said last year, and things had REALLY calmed down with os2 until 2xl was announced.

Not comparing to the Akai OS, that makes no sense.
It feels hacked ( or forced )because it disconnects.
JJ needs to move past the reset button way of doing the OS, it has got to be a smoother transition between the work done on a prvevious OS and how the next OS interpets it.
The Hacked feel comes from not being able to transition your work easily from OS1>OS2>XL.
The current methods typically means to get the features the new version adds you will pretty much have to start a project over on the next OS instead of being able to simply continue with the new OS.
I don't really care about the debugging stage what I dislike is the lack of backward compatibility.

I guess JJ didn't have a long-term vision since the beginning and insofar as there are hard-to-implement new features request there are strategic choices to make. As for the backward compatibility it's true it's annoying. Just remember on which OS you did your beats.

One of my another thought of the day is : instead of that tap tempo + power on stuff when you boot on the mpc it would be nice to have a column where you choose between os1, os2 and os2xl to boot. (hope it's not too dangerous for the flash memory)

Os2xl is still in its infancy and I don't feel now i can make a beat without problems.

not ging to happen. xl resides in the same code space as 0s2. there fore it writes over os2 in the install process. if you have xl then you no longer have os2 and have to reinstall to use it.

sad truth - the amount of work it'd have taken to make each os compatible is simply not financially feasible. we might not like it, but there's no other option unless we were each guaranteed to drop significant dollars to pay for it.

if someone follows the incentive to upgrade, that's on them. if this is just not acceptable, stick with whatever you've made the most projects on.

Understand non of this is about anti-JJism, it's just I would like to see a more consistent path for his work.

Nym, it seems most 1k users appreciate the adds to the 1k since it's their main weapon.
Unfortunately for me it's not and it makes it hard to appreciate the 1k in many ways.
It's really sad since it still goes back to the fact that Akai fell short and many of the things JJ added were to the 1k back to the functionality of previous MPC and then JJ began the growth.

When I use something like the MV or 4k they have a more pleasing arrangement of functions that the JJ OS.
Once you make some mental adjustments the JJ features can be useable but still may not have the most direct path to a function.

I just wish JJ work followed a built upon design instad of the reset path.

Also found it strange that XL was the first OS to actually cause me to have to adjust the pad response, unlike any of the others it actually made the pads almost non-responsive.
It did it with both the old style and new style pads.

what in particular here?

same old 22 top, 25 bottom, 18 threshold for me. but anyway, this is a one-time setting - is that a big deal? (rhetorical, haha not really interested in a discussion)

this definitely is very apparent, i know where you are coming from. what features aren't directly accessible to you?

for me, it's CC graphical edit, since you have to turn your tracks to and from midi etc to access em. i wish that there was just 1 track type and a variety of views/edit modes, instead of a bunch of track modes each with their own specific edit screen. square is a rectangle, rectangle is not a square etc etc etc

One of the direct functions I would like is the Input thru and sample input screen being one and the same.
It's a logical path as well as related.
Mode Record should allow access to the new Input settings at least with the Window function.

Being able to go back and convert a DRUM PGM to INST PGM or INST PGM to DRUM PGM.

Not wanting to talk about the pads adjustment just strange that OS2 required no adjustment and OS almost shut the pads completely off?

The loop function should allow you to input loop positions not just bars.
The realtime could still be forced to bar for the smooth transition when doing realtime manipulation of loops points.

JJ could just use to the it's MIDI because you assign a MIDI channel to the track.
Kinda like how the MV does it, it's MIDI because it using MIDI, it's DRUM because it's internal samples.
Or he could make it like the 4k where it uses MIDI and you route it internally or externally based on your needs.

yeah those are all good, logical ideas, haha a lot like so many of us have
i especially like INST to DRUM pgm for more velocitative layering capacity but i tend to just not have the patience to build such mega programs in the mpc when i could do it in NNXT.

i dunno. nobody's gonna ever be 100% happy, especially as more stuff gets added it's just going to continue to tease us in more and more ways. for me, overall, i'm well satisfied with the current feature set in 2xl (1.03 included the last of my "final 3" requests, those being quantize strength, "duration to next note" and crossfade loop).

right now i'm most interested in helping to smooth the workflow in Drum Grid Edit, which has been broadly improved but needs specific adjustments.

i've updated the three songs i was working on most heavily in os2, tracked the rest to finish in DAW, and started five new projects in os2xl.

these days i'm on holiday from everything though, visiting parents in virginia again...girlfriend's coming down from new york tomorrow on the chinatown bus. good times.

chinatown bus? damn yo, you should get her on a vamoose bus... $25 each way, way safer, cleaner, less sketchy and it goes to virginia too.

(i know that was super off topic, but i know way too many horror stories from the chinatown bus).
