This thread makes me think about the "Is Sampling Dead" thread in the Off Topic forum. Sampling is an artform. I think hardware is an essential tool to this artform. You can make music without sampling and without dedicated hardware. But in doing so..something is simply lost...espcially in today's hip hop.

Truthfully software COULD be better than an MPC. Giving you all the features for production plus multi tracking and expandability and power etc. The thing is that you have to get the different softwares and controllers to work together without bugs and limitations etc. Just like the JJ OS makes using the 1000 and 2500 better there is no software + controller combo that can quite give you the MPC production workflow without some major trade offs. Specifically Live and a padkontrol does indeed come the closest but lacks a couple basic features that are deal breakers. While close to the MPC plus more, the workflow is still choppy and slower in some areas. Theoretically the software would be better but you just don't have a complete software MPC replacement yet.

BTW to get a good software system that does sequencing in real time (64 buffers or less) is not as cheap as some let on.

true. but this strongly depends also on your soundcard. but to have l 64 samples buffer and no freezes you need an expensive one and a good computer!
