De La Soul is Dead 180g Reissue Missing Tracks

I finally got a chance to pick up the vinyl reissue of "De La Soul is Dead." It's been my goal to get all my favorite LPs (Hip-Hop and otherwise) on vinyl and in a crate or two of favorites. Basically, a crate I can reach into and pick up an LP I wouldn't mind listening to from front to back at random.

Anyway . . . Rhino's subsidiary "4 Guys With Beards" reissued Tommy Boy's single LP release of "De La Soul is Dead . . . " not the 2XLP edition. That means that tracks were omitted (with no warning of that before purchase). Some of those tracks sort of defined the comedy of this LP. I'd rather they crammed all the tracks onto one side like they did with the original "3 Feet High . . . " release.

If you pick this up you'll be missing the following tracks, I guess in exchange for 180g vinyl. Not sure how I feel about this since I'd say this was a defining LP for me in young adulthood.

Bastards, those are the essential tracks that I like about that album. I use to rock Afro Connections on my mini boom box back in the day all the time, just had that bassline I could play a million times. A reissue is a reissue. Why the f**k are they editing it? StonesThrow did the same sh*t with Stark Reality.

could it be because of sample clearance issues they had with the original release?

that would be my guess.

i think that was the album that caused all these sample laws to go into effect.

No, that was "3 Feet High and Rising." The samples on "De La Soul is Dead" were all credited in the sleeve, more pedantically than any LP I've ever seen since. The reissue is no different.

I believe what it boils down to is the original commercial US vinyl release was only a single disc release, while those extra tracks were CD-only. If you're like me and only ever owned it on CD -- well, I guess you wouldn't know that.

On the other hand, the promo US vinyl release was 2X -- so it's not like the plates didn't exist for duplication. There's also non-US releases that were 2XLP. Discogs claims there was a commercial US 2XLP release, but it has the same catalog number as the promo release, so I'm not sure if that's a mistake or not.

Those were just some of the most hilarious skits I ever heard. I can remember when I first bought the CD being in the back of my parents' car on the way home with a discman trying not to pee myself laughing.

yea, quite a few albums back then had MAD "bonus tracks" on the CD in contrast to the vinyl and cassette releases... another album like that that comes to mind is THE GOATS, "tricks of the shade"... if you got anything other than the CD version, you were missing like a third of the album it seemed... too bad noones gonna reissue that one though... :cry: nice cop on a 180 gram de la is dead album though.. that album is definitely on my wishlist... when i first copped that album a few years after it dropped, i think in 94 or so, i thought it was weak... after a few weeks i started diggin it... now its kinda tied with buhloone mindstate as my favorite de la album... :lol:



what did your copy cost anyway? i assume about a dub...


whats dope about buhloone mindstate is that they could probably fit the whole album on one quality lp... :D
