Cool Edit Question

I have an issue with Mutitracking in Cool Edit.
If I have a sample looped on track 1 and I go to record the drums on track 2, it will record the sample from track 1 again on the track 2. I am unable to record multiple tracks without it duplicating the other tracks on the new track I am recording on. If I mute Track 1 and record on Track 2 it works fine, but I would like to hear track 1 while I am recording live drums into track 2. Help!

what souncard are you using, if it is multiple input, even if it two channel input. you got to pan ch 1 and ch 2 right if you go into the track section on the left and right click, it brings up the mixer for tht channel. and the pan control,
try tht.

I use SB Audigy.
I dont think its a soundcard or panning issue.
My homeboy uses Cool Edit with the sound card that came with his Compaq and he records vocals over beats and doesn't have the problem. He cant figure it out either.
For example if I was to record vocals over the beat I would have to mute the beat on track 1 and record vocals with no beat on track 2 accapella. It would be impossible!

what if you press the solo button on the track your recording to? that might work. but that might only let you hear what your recording.....try that...

Yeah, I tried to solo that track I am recording on and I can olny hear that track. I'm thinking it a setting within the system, but searched through everything. I need a Cool Edit expert.

You might need to get an out board mixer, that way you can slect the beat to a sub group and be able to hear what is being recorded as to what's recorded. I'm not next to my mixer but i'm sure this might be able to work out the problem.

I had this same problem too at first.

Peep....here's what you do....

Open up the Audio Volume control mixer (the little speaker icon in the bottom right sytem tray on your screen)...leave it open and minimize it. make sure it has "line in" selected and at appropriate volume (sounds like you already have that done, since you are able to record track one).

Now, within CoolEdit, under the Options menu, you will see something that says "Windows Recording Mixer". Click on that. Now, on one of these two mixer screens (cant remember which, dont have CoolEdit on the machine I am on currently) you should see something that says "Stereo Mix". You want to DE-SELECT THAT. Make sure the check mark is NOT in the box. Make sure "Line in" is checked, or microphone, or whatever source you are using, but make sure STEREO MIX is NOT selected.

Presto! problem solved.

What is happening when you have STEREO MIX selected is that you are telling the computer to record both what you play into it and what is already recorded on the first track. By deselecting that option, you tell it to ONLY record what is coming in through LINE IN/MICROPHONE/WHATEVER. When it plays back, it plays back everything you have recorded on all tracks, so your problem is fixed.

I also know this doesnt work on certain sound cards, but try it anyway on yours. I found this out the hard way when I was recording a streaming radio show but also had AOL Instant Messenger running.....and when I later listened to the recording of the radio show, I also heard the AIM sound effects in the mix. Simply because---when you tell it to record the STEREO MIX, its going to record any and every sound made by the computer, internally or sent in through external sources.

Hope this helps...if not, you're going to have to upgrade your sound card. I know this because an older computer running CoolEdit didnt have the Stereo Mix option, while a newer one I have with a better soundcard DOES have the option.
