is this 4000 faulty someone please help......

hope some one can help...i have just purchased a slightly battered 4000.ive had all the mp's over the years except the 60 and know them well...

the problem im having is that when i manually press the record button to sample after setting it up to record from the line input a box opens up saying that its recording and giving the option to manually stop it when desired but the box closes very quickly on its own accord before i press stop so i get about half a second of sample!!!! i have set it up to record for 10 minutes so its not the fact that i have only set it to record for 1 second, it just seems to close the 'recording' box straight after i press 'record'

this 4000 is slightly beaten up and clearly needs some attention in areas but i'd be gratefull to find out the 'sampling' feature isnt broke too...

ive read the manual and also have no problem performing the same procedure on all my other mp's i have in the same way so if im doing something wrong i would be gratefull for a tip in the right direction...

All i want to do is sample ............someone help me so i dont have to turn back to one of the models i know so well......

How much memory do you have on it? And what amount should it have anyway?

he said it has 512? it says it has 99 min of sample time when i was in mono left mode.....

Did you let him know that you're having this problem?

well the guy doesnt know anything about the machine....he had a room full of expensive equipment and didnt know how to use any of it........(typical)

anyway i got it for a reasonable price and am willing to do what it takes to fix it as after messing with it for an hour (not too much without being able to sample tho i see the potential in this beast.......also it has a load of sick samples and sounds on there that i would like to keep......talking of wich is there a way to get them samples onto my computer?? ie if i connect via the usb cable would the 4000 hardrive come up on my desktop to access it's contents??

Well, and first of all, have you checked out what the manual states as far as reinitialising the system? You can find this under "Global" as a matter of fact. It may as well be that someone made a few changes such as clocking the system @ 96khz or something, which would shorten your record time tremendously. Plus it depends on what's already loaded in memory as well.

But since it's second hand, I'd reset everything back to it's default parameters...set 'em up the way you want them.

there is a max rec time that you have to manually set when sampling:
before hitting the RECORD button, check (i go on memory coz i just sold my 4k) the left side of the screen, you'll see a field that should say something like 0m10s
you can go there and manually increase the sampling time.
no, your mp is not faulty at all

damn i wish that was the case....i am familiar with the record time option you talk of and had set it to ten minutes so that isnt the problem...i remember the same option on the 3000...thanks for your response though....any more suggestions?? im gonna take the lid off tonight to see whats going on (or not for that matter) inside this beast.......

not looking forward to it but desperate to get this mpc working properly....

right i took the lid off tonight...removed and put back the ram...cleaned up inside a little and put it back together.......still the same problem...as i press record the record box closes by itself instantly instead of me pressing the stop button...weird.....anyway after about ten attempts it started working as it should (same on all other mpc's) but only around 1 in ten attempts works completly random though...sometimes twice in a row then no joy for 6 attempts etc......

i know this sounds mad but cant seem to explain it better...i initialised the mp today and see that its running on 44.1

The machine recognises the 512 ram so im thinking either re install the o.s or maybe remove one of the ram sticks one at a time to eliminate possibilities....im really not sure and completly new to all this sort of problem solving (and the 4000)

Every other mp i own and have had works fine so im only familiar with making beats not the engineering side

Tonight was good though as i made my first beat on it by loading samples from the hardrive and recognise that this is the king mpc i just need to get it operating properly....any suggestions would be great......

mhhhh.... strange problem....

have you checked and replaced the cmos battery on the mainboard (3v lithium like in pc towers)...

had also a lot of problems (constant crashes etc...) cause of the dead battery. you know that the 4k is a few years old and these batteries are normaly working about 2 years w/o problems.
costs only a few euros, give it a try.

check also every cable if they are sitting well, try to pull out and pull in the connector cables from the mainboard....

and yes, try to reinstall the os.

yeh man tonight it seemed to work much more consistantly although still sometimes the problem would occur.......im off to buy the usb cable this week so will try re installing the o.s (providing i can do it as cd drive is not working either)

When i opened it yesterday i noticed there was a cable missing from the cd drive wich goes into the board above it (following the pictures of some one elses that i saw on this forum)
So that will be my next challenge........

just burn that shit to a disk and load it throught the cd drive

cd drive dnt work either....light flashes when turning unit on but cant get it to open...

nightmare.........although still remaining enthusiastic.....
