Further investigation into the bowels of the MPC 1000 service manual revealed the cpu this thing uses is the hd6417727f160. The manual for that reveals the following info:

Bus state controller (BSC)
• Physical address space divided into six areas (area 0, areas 2 to 6), each of
up to 64 Mbytes, with the following features settable for each area:
* Bus size (8, 16, or 32 bits)
* Number of wait cycles (hardware wait function also waited)
* Direct connection of SRAM, synchronous DRAM, and burst ROM
possible by designating memory to be connected to each area
* Supports PCMCIA interface (2 channels)
* Chip select signals (CS0, CS2–CS6) for relevant area
• Synchronous DRAM refresh function
* Programmable refresh interval
* Supports CAS-before-RAS refresh and self-refresh modes
* Supports power-down DRAM
• Synchronous DRAM burst access function
• Big endian or little endian can be specified

So it could be 16 bit or 32 but addressable, but I am going to assume it is 32 bit.
There are 6 possible 'channels' of 64M memory available. We know there is 64M flash onboard, so that's one channel. There is 16M of onboard DRAM, so that's the second channel. So that leaves 4 channels of 64M addressable memory available. This could be 256M of sodimm. So it is worth trying a 256M sodimm that is to spec. 256M, 8 chips of dram at 16Mx16 each. However, it is highly probable that only two addressable memory channels can be assigned per sodimm slot. So in other words, they could have put two sodimm slots in there and used all four channels, but didn't. So two 64M addressable memory channels are going unused. What it also unfortunate is that the onboard dram of 16M are also going unused, and consuming a 64M channel once a sodimm in inserted. What this also means however is that a single 128M sodimm should provide 128M of memory, as long as it consists of chips having no higher density than 16M. At this point, finding one of those is probably harder than just buying a 256M sodimm though.

So oh well, I'll update when I have given it a try. Worst case scenario, I learned why the MPC 1000 has a 128M limitation, and that it has nothing to do with reading half of the sodimm.

I tried a 256M SODIMM that used a chip having a 16Mx8 density and breadth. This would be the lowest density possible, and it still only read 128M. So this tells me that the CPU is indeed only programmed to access two of the four available channels. It is still possible however that a 128M sodimm could be used to get 128M, but as that was not my intent, and isn't much cheaper, I have no interest in testing that theory any further. I believe it would be possible to program the CPU to access all 4 channels of 64M available on the memory slot, but I know nothing about that sort of thing, so...

whats goin on?
i gota sandisk 2gb cf card but im having problems with the cf drive. possibly a bent/broken pin.
is their anything i can do myself to repair it? i.e. replace the drive? im having trouble trying to find a repairer in my area (melbourne/australia).
haven't upgraded the ram as of yet but im considering a few options now.

i everybody, im a newb to the 500. it came with a 128mb sound library. i cant fit more than one 4 sec sample on it, even if i pull just about everything off of it via my computer than attempt to put the samples on it in place of the stock programs and sample files... is this normal? and will a new blank card fix it?

yo i do know it's a mpc1000 thread, but the mpc2500 ram upgrade thread refers to here so.... i bought myself a 256mb ram 144pin and all u want, it is from Hynix, popped that into the back of my mpc, when i turn it on it says "256mb installed" and freezes there. any1 have any recommendations ?

yo alx2000, i've read ur post now, but it is way too technical for me, and i'd be satisfied with 128mb anyway, but i want this thing to work, this is what i actually bought : 256 Mo PC133 SDRAM SODIMM 256MB 144 PIN PC 133 SD RAM, put that in my 2500 and now it says "256mb installed" what the heck ?

I was given a fairly new MPC (used like 5 times) along with 2 CF cards manufactured by Lexar with each holding 2GB.


How can I check to find out what type of RAM is on the MPC?

Also are these cards good and for what? I thought they were just for saving samples, programs etc.

For all those living in Oz, here are my recommendations:

CF CARD:

Dick Smith Electronics is currently selling their own brand of 2GB compact flash cards for about $20.00. Just bought mine today and it works perfectly.

The Dick Smith brand is called DSE and comes in a plastic container with a green paper backing.

RAM:

This guy on eBay is selling the exact RAM we're all after for about $30.00 all up (incl. postage). I recently purchased mine from the same guy and it works perfectly. Aussie seller - no issues at all.

To all those not living in Oz who are after RAM... You can always try contacting the guy and see if he'll ship to you for a little extra. All the prices I have listed are in AUD, so it's not going to cost you much extra if you're in the USA or the UK.
