Track Mute/Next Sequence question.

Just a quick one- I've searched for this but can't seem to find a relevant answer so if anyone knows it would be great.

Basically i'm looking to use the Track Mute mode live using the pads to mute/unmute tracks, however where i have a long sample (say on track 1) and I mute that track- the sample will continue to play till the end(i normally set my samples to mono/one shot- on the same mute group so they cut each other out). Just wondering if there is a way i can set-up the track mute so that it cuts off any long sample when the track is muted.

Hope I've explained this clearly.

This feature is not currently available for ANY MPC that runs Akai OS. The only MPC that does do this, is the
MPC 1000 with JJOS2XL, which just came out 2 weeks ago.

Mute/stop of one-shot sample=IMMEDIATE
At the time of this condition, the behavior when carrying out mute ON/OFF of the long sample can be changed by selection of MUTE TYPE.


Please select the type of mute in the "MUTE TYPE" field.

NOTE ON
The note event of tracks is turned OFF and muted.
In this case, it is not pronounced until it receives note-on, even if it cancels mute.


LEVEL
The level of a track is set to 0 (OFF) and muted.
In this case, even if it cancels mute immediately after mute, pronunciation is resumed to that timing.

Both of these 2 config options... Mute type: Note On or Level
and Oneshot Samples: Immediate or End of Oneshot

were suggested for MPC 4000 suggestions serveral years ago, but Akai chose to ignore them and STILL hasn't implemented them into the product. At least JJ has put them into the 1000 if it's needed, and they are cheap enough to cop used ....

Thats a real shame- i still have my 1000 (though the pads are shot and its been through the wars) but it seems crazy to revert back to it after just getting into the 4000.

I can kinda get round this by assigning the parts with long samples to the q-link sliders and using them to cut the particular tracks- its more work, but guess if it does the trick!

Oh.. myself, I"m planning on going with a Double 1000 live setup running OS2XL, with Midibox Masterclock between them, to stop and start them insync between loading songs (as 128M is pitifully too low) and leave the 4000 as the heart of the studio. I can pack both 1000's and the Midibox Master clock in Record Bag or Laptop bag

I don't use a lot of 1 shot samples myself, I'll generally make mine normal play and hold the pad for the duration that I want it to note, so I haven't really had this problem itself. You might have to try it that way, so the mute actually mutes those long samples. If you don't want to hold the
pad the entire time, just hook up a sustain pedal and use that to hold the note while recording. That way it will mute the Note and the sound will cutoff.

The nature of the track mute sending note off messages does make sense in most cases, but it sure would have been nice to have the option to let notes play out. Sometimes you just need to split track data over a few tracks to spread it out. If you have no overlapping notes, then you can simply mute when you want the sound to stop (as it is intended to work). The last 2 tips above are good too.

There is always work and compromise that goes into converting a studio track to a more live friendly format, but if it can give you more control over the performance, it is often worth the effort.

That's hot! At one point I had 2 XLs, man it is sweet to be able to mix between 2 MPCs. The sync problem was probably what made me give up although the bulk and midi issues didn't help. The mungo sync2 was announced around then, I think that was the only product at the time that could do that sync start feature. I also had to merge the MIDI outs since my stuff mostly relies on external gear. Not sure if you will need to do that too, but I guess you could avoid that by using one MPC for sequences that only use internal sounds.

That is by far the most interesting midibox to me. I really wanted to build that one and then have something I can add custom code to. My biggest reservation is the limited documentation on it might be an issue for a first time midibox builder. Plus I realize I already have too many other distractions keeping me from actually making music, ugh!
