Buying a Turntable

Is it necessary to get a mixer if you just wanna use it for sampling?

Not if the deck has line level outputs or if you buy a $20 phono preamp.

Good belt drives are typically better for sampling. With the 1200's and all direct drives the stylus can pick up the sound of the central motor churning and grinding... can be irritating if you're sampling a quiet piece..

I can't imagine the stylus on the PT-01 will be very loud. The loudest stylus I've heard is the Shure MM47 @ 9mV then the Ortofon Scratch @ 7mV and then standard styli like the Stanton AL500 @ 5mV. If you sample with a Shure it sounds louder/crunchier, the Ortofons sound smoother/warmer and the Stantons sound like normal. The stylus can make a big difference as well.

If you're not skratchin' you might not need a direct drive and a cheaper belt drive with a good stylus might be a better option for sampling.

what do you think would be the best option strictly for sampling, at a reasonable price?

Numark pt-01 is not bad overall but consider what else you could get for the money. I noticed it's a bit muddy compared to my torque drive table . In comparison, the samples from the PT-01 have more bass even with the tone settings on high and you don't record with alot of clarity.

It does come in handy when digging tho. Battery operated and easy to take around just dont get ganked for trying to flash numark logos every where.

I agree with that if you are only going to sample get belt drive. Your samples will be clearer because there will not mechanical noise. However, the Nu Mark does have a lot of Bass, but I am not opposed to that. You can filter that out, but you can't get it back if you record it without it.....

Not to mention you could filter that bass and make something awesome with it.

So you guys figure the PT01 is a decent enough choice? and also would i be able to just plug that right into the mpc and get my samplin' on?

Please do not buy a PT-01 for sampling / listening purposes. Those things are only good for digging.

You'd be much better off getting a belt drive Technics off of Craigslist and putting a decent cart on it for $50 than buying that thing for anything serious.

If you want to buy new and go low budget get the Stanton T50/52; it comes with a decent cart, and if you want to you can put something even better on it. Cost? $99. Belt drives are fine for sampling and listening, perhaps even better than direct drives.

I have a Vestax Handy Trax and I wouldn't even consider using it to rip vinyl as MP3s, let alone sample from.

While it is a great portable TT its garbage for sampling.

lmfao, too late, I already bought it. What's so bad about it for samlping? so far I think it sounds alright.
