Adding Effects

The efx board that you can get with the MPC2kXL is alirght, but I was wondering what some of you other guys do to add more powerful efx to the whole song or one single instrument. I personally would like to use my computer, but I don't want to buy an expensive piece of software that does a lot of other things, so I was also wondering if there are any good software programs dedicated to effects processing?

If you want something cheap then you better stick with your fx board, good fx also software based cost money. Most of these fx come as plugins (VST,ActiveX, protools ...). Which means that you'll need a host program to run the plugins in (Cubase, Logic, Protools ...).

Since you already have a computer, all you really need is a decent soundcard and some software.
This should be no more expensive than good hardware.


I'm very much a fan of Sonalkis effects. The eq and compressor are simply great, and not too expensive either. Don't let the price fool you, this compressor sounds better than my Focusrite hardware. Download a demo and see for yourself.

You can run vst effects on a pc in Chainer. There's a free demo for that too.

You can edit samples and add effects using Sound Forge. The effects are pretty good. You can also download a lot of free plugins for Soundforge.

cosign.....i dont really like transfering my files to and from the computer, or invole the computer at all...but when i do, its always with soundforge. Its self explanitory, and gets the job done.

howevever, be sure to get a sound card with plenty of inputs, otherwise later down the road youll wish you did.

BTW. what exactly do you want the effects for? to be more specific-i use sound forge for eq, chopping, but realtime effects may be more difficult this way...so maybe a hard ware box may work better
