Never thought of that, I'm gonna try that on the next beat.

a lot of advices were good according to me... i just want to mention its not about simply being ''offbeat''... there's a certain relationship between ur drum sounds u want to establish... when it kinda .. articulates itself.. or pumps...
a tip that really made me better at this is to :
1) Use short kicks..
2) use short snares...
3) Lay down a kick on each 1st beat of ur mesures..
4) Put down ur snares a bit EARLIER in comparison to the kicks... but dont make them even... and not later.. its a completely different type of swag...
5) THEN.. put the hihats and they are the most important i guess.. they make the whole thing ''articulate'' itself... and now u have to pratice them...
6) when and only when ur good at that.. try to vary the ''loose and longer sounds'' fromt he shorter ones.. notice most of these drums use kinda wide Claps ... ''spilled'' over the beat... some also use some longer and looser hihats on the downbeats...
those drums necessitate a lot of sensitivity towards rythm and most of drummers i know dont even understand they are different from a perfect 4/4 or a 66% swing...
and u can achieve thim with or without quantizing
have fun
Ldizzy wrote:A wonderful way to create DOPE GROOVES and dragging effects.. is to treat ur drums as ''long samples'' (as they are samples anyways)... and just trigger them as chunks... like.. rec a serie of 4 hihats at 92 bpm and lay ur kicks at 95... and then try to lay em over.. play with it.. ull see... i used to do that a lot... using delay on some sounds helps too...
there are so many ways and its definately a good idea to try em... those modern hip hop beats are not easily conceptualized with the average drummer's mind (now if u talkin about the JBs or the roots its another thing)

Word up to that. Good idea. And I understand the JBs and Roots grooves already. And I am not trying to bite Dilla, I just believe this style is heavily influenced by him. Plus you put Dilla in the title of a thread and people will look at it. LOL. But it was relevant to the thread.
And the JBs are crazy funky. I love them.
? DEM REAL FUNKY

Never tried it, but just throwing it out there as I just thought of it. It's not a good dilla-bite idea, but it might be helpful for something else purposely off beat.
