Installing Rotary (Jog) Wheel Encoder.

Ive done a jog wheel installtion before when i had a 2kxl but i never took any pics and over the weekend after i finally moved everything in and fired up my MPC 2500 i discovered that during the move my encoder got fuked up somehow. So anyways i just got the part in from MPCstuff.com and when i get around to installing it ill take some pics (dont have a camera) and post them up on this thread. It doesnt look to difficult.

im no master at soldering but it isnt crazy difficult as long as you have some desolder braid, steady hand and patience.

Good luck, I'm looking forward to seeing that. The 2500 encoder is a completely different part than the XL one.

ok so this makes no fking sense gdamn mpcstuff sent me a shot encoder. installed the encoder and de & re soldered the encoder THREE FKING times and it did not work. i put my old encoder back in and wow it works still not sharp but it works better than it did. jesus will have fking pics later after i chill the fk out.

ugh i promise ill have pics up this weekend. still kinda pissed over the whole thing. its a very simple process. ill explain it here then post pics up.


Gather Tools -
Rachet Screwdriver w/ Standard Screwdriver bit. (i love racheting screwdrivers they make twisting easy)

Scissors - used to cut the desolder braid.

Flat Head Screwdriver 2.0 mm - this is probably best described as a glasses sized screwdriver.

Solder gun - no more than 30 watts!!! i used a 25watt solder gun and that was a little to hot! Preferably one that plugs in i have two "portable" ones (butane powered and one battery powered) but its best to use one that plugs in so you get constant heat.

Solder - or whatever its called the sh*t you use to join the electronics

Desolder Braid!!! - if your going to be desoldering electronics this is a must or you can use what i think is called a solder sucker never used it but its basically a tiny suction pump that i guess cleans the solder away. hmm sounds better than the braid.

Steps To De/In stalling encoder jog wheel.

1. Make sure your MPC is off and unplugged from the back of the MPC.
2. Take the cover off there is a total of 14 screws of various sizes (i think three sizes total) to taking the cover off.
Two (total 4) on each side that holds those fake side panels
Five on the very back of the MPC (note there are more than 5 screws on the back you only want the
the ones that hold the top cover to the main unit.
Two that hold the panel for the card reader and dvd unit togethe(these are not necessary to remove)
Three that are a b*tch to get to you have to flip the unit upside down and at the very front are three
screws that are recessed you will need an extension bit to get to these
3. Once cover is removed go ahead and take the rubber pads off so they dont silde around and get in the way.
4. Now you are setup you should see the PCB board to the right (where the volume pot is and jog wheel is) you should see five wired connectors that look like they snap on to the board (dont know the proper term will be shown in the pics) they are all on the outer rim of the board. Two to the upper left (near LCD both white), one at the very top (colored red), one to the upper right (color white), one at the very bottom (black colored). You need to remove these CAREFULLY. The white and red ones are ones that silde in and are pretty easy to remove just pinch the ends and silde back, if your hands are petite then silde it back a tiny amt then carefully use the flat head (eyeglasses screwdriver) and wiggle it right and left while sliding away to remove. The black one is a b*tch to remove as its a reverse of the other ones. You will need that flat head again to gently pry the outside and then silde away one side at a time. AGAIN be very careful in removing these.

NOTE the black one the best way at getting to the black connector is to remove three of the buttons (the play, stop, and the one next to the stop) this makes it easy to remove the black connector.

5. Once removed its now time to unscrew the screws that hold the PCB board to the unit. One screw at the top should have a piece that acts like a ground (will be in the pics) remember where that goes. its 7 or 8 screws total i believe.
7. now that you have the screws removed flip the PCB board over. Locate the soldered points Should be 4 big ones and three tiny ones (will have it in the pics).
8. Desolder time. IM not going to go into the steps of proper soldering as i learned on my own so im more than likely not desoldering properly. But i can tell you this its best to clear away ALL of the old solder with your braid or sucker.
9. Resolder time. Use enough but not a lot of solder and try to keep it clean

10 Flip PCB board, Screw down board (make sure you get your ground screw back in). Connect the connectors. Replace PADS, Put cover back on, Have fun fiddling with the jog wheel to get the cover to seat properlyu with the MPC. ME i left mine off im gonna sand it down to where i dont need to remove the cover to take the jog wheel off and on.

it started to act wacky so say i was on #1 then turned it forward 2 3 etc. if i turned it to fast it would go 1 2 3 2 3 1 3 4 5 6 7 8 7 7 8 sh*t like that.

and if you read i never got to put in the new one because the fker was defective after resoldering it three damn times and powering it up it didnt work at all. put the old one in and it works fine????????

Black Connector is the most difficult one

Use a 2.0mm flat head or smaller to remove.


unscrew the board and remove place on a flat surface



desolder and resolder new jog wheel


and reverse (make sure you put the ground connector back through the screw near the red connector).

Just a thought, because you said you tried three times to make it work...did you make sure the three actual signal connectors aren't shortcut after resoldering? That looks difficult to properly solder there.

well when i did it the fourth time i put back the old jog wheel and it worked just fine actually better than before.

Thanks a lot... lately,my jog wheel has been struggling to work with any precision... like i'll turn it and it won't do anything. I have to turn it a couple more notches to get it to "catch". Any thoughts????
