HOW DO I FIX MY MIDI FROM MY NEW YAMAHA MOTIF XS6?

Just got a brand new forat custom made MPC 4000 and i sampled hundreds of drums into it and now i wanna record my midi patterns i recorded on the motif to the mpc via midi...... but the outs never work and i never get any sound only the measure showing that the keys are triggering mydrum sample pads, but i want to actually hear my keyboard sound and make it a slave!! its a brand new yamaha motif XS6 , if someone could please walk me through this man it would be so benificial

I swear if there is anyone in the los angeles area let me know because i will pay you plenty of money to come to my house and fix this dam situation, its has something to do with both the keyboard and mpc.

Yeah there has been alot of that going lately. Getting the basics is paramount.

lol what do you mean, i dont understand what your saying... my mpc is brand new chillin and motif is on the pattern screen, and the midi chord is runnin out the motif and into ints. I ..... but lets say i open one of my drum kits on the mpc, then all the keyboard does is just trigger the samples i just recorded into it from the motif on the drum pads.......

If you want to slave the sequencer of the motif rather than trigger its sounds, I'd probably go the route of setting the 4k as the master.

You'll have to put the motif's sequencer on external or whatever mode to allow it to slave.

right so can you just briefly tell me what all i need to to do for my mpc to accept the midi sequencer (ints. a, ect) also when i change the settings on my motif xs 6 nothing changes, so let me tell you what the midi sync screen says

also let me add that when im on my main screen i hear absolutely no sound from the key board...... but if i was to click the record button as if i was going to sample in something, i can hear the piano , but not on the main screen.....

the sound will not play from the keyboard through the mpc speakers, i got one plugged into my keyboard and one into the mpc , and the mpc is reading my pattern when i play it now, but there is still no final play from the mpc speaker

the in measure is receiving my midi and stuff from my pattern, but why wont my mpc play it through its speakers, something gotta be wrong with the mpcs

motifator.com forums will answer ur questions. look for aguy by the name of synthgeek or badmister. synthgEEK had the 4k before.

If I were you and I want to play my drums from the 4k and also route my midi sequence from the motif to the 4k I would do several things.

First I would set the motif as the master and 4k as the slave on the motif read your manual on how to do that and on the 4k press MISC page button and SYNC page at least route all incoming midi to sync in section set to midi clock and set the right input INT I or INT II depending on how you did it.

Second on the main page you will assign the drum program to the track you have two the (INT) OUT 1 Part: 1-Drum kit
(INT) OUT 2: OFF

These are basically from midi input A and B that your motif is connected to in the back of the 4k so make sure you have the right out connected. Next since If want my midi sequence from the motif to play the drums in the 4k I need to convert my drum programs to keygroup programs so that all the pads line up Chromatically just like the motif structure so that the right sounds triggers. You see if you load up your sounds in a drum program on the 4k the midi numbers are numbered differently this is on all aka mpcs than GM midi structure on keyboards Roland, Korg, and Yamaha which are keygroup samplers you just need to convert the mpc drum midi organization to the GM keygroup structure to line them up right.

Now it is important that you have no sequences recorded in your mpc so that you don`t get feedback and it is important that the audio outputs of both your 4k and your motif is running into either a 4 channel or 16 channel mixer depending on your setup or a audio interface on your computer to hear your sounds. I guess you know midi is not audio just note information and so on. Also you can turn off your 4k local on by pressing midi page button and press the filter page, check the MIDI IN setting on the top and scrolling down to the event list to 122-Local control and changing it to off.

Now press your make sure the sync on the 4k press play on the motif and your motif should control your 4k and the drum sounds on the 4k and the motif should work out and sync.


Most people including myself do at dabmeister suggested to have the 4k as your main sequencer and the motif as a slave sound module. IF you set your motif to local off you can use your motif`s keyboard to record your patterns onto the 4k`s tracks. Make sure that the 4k tracks are set up like OUT1: OUT-A Ch: 1 Device:Device 1 you have to read your manual on how to name your motif on here and how to set the motif as a slave.


This is a little long wind and yes there even more steps one can do to setup your mpc and motif but you are the key as far as long you want to work.










Think of this the WHY use 4k or Motif as sequencer???


Motif as a sequencer cause ready made patterns, easy automation with a knob turns, arpeggiators in the sequences, and the tons of build in pads, leads, synth drums, and bass. It is all set to go just you may want to use drum pads to program your own pattern instead of the keys. Simply set the 4k to just a controller. Press midi page, press routing and you will see the routing

Midi In-1>>sequencer

Midi In-2>>sequencer

Drum pad>>sequencer

Change drum pad >>>Midi Out-A now you can play your motif drums using only the 4k pads no sequence no triggering the internal sounds nothing.



4k as your main sequnecer is you already have your own drum sounds, phrases, and you love the 4k sequencer as it is simple, the track swing is fan static, shifting the track forward and back, it has 4 midi outputs, 2 midi inputs, and you don`t want to you the patterns on your motif so much you want to make simple boom bap feels not the techno futuristic stuff on many workstations. Actually I like the futuristic stuff but that is just me. You sync all gear to your 4k assign a midi track and program by hand everything on the 4k with your motif mainly as a sound module. Midi track is automatically setup as chromatic scale so no convert is necessary to play your motif sounds.

That is it I`m sure there may be some items I missed or others will add more steps and more advice which are welcome as long as it helps you.


Basically read all the manuals for the steps to setup up the connections and think of your personally preference to work with each sequencer mainly the 4ks or the motif that I think it the first step for you.



I prefer the 4k sequencer cause I`m more experienced with it even though I used triton sequencer, logic sequencers, ableton sequencer, pro tool sequencer, ESX sequencer and on and on it is a preference not a rule.


But I`m open to new ways of working too.
