Help a total n00b.

Basically, I just got this feeling like I really want to buy an MPC1000, and just sit with it and learn to make beats and stuff. Thing is, i've never done stuff like that before and i'm afraid i'll buy one and it'll just end up in a cupboard unused. Do you really need a record deck to get the most out of an MPC to get samples etc? Would I perhaps be better having a play around with some PC software to see if I can get used to producing music etc? Is there any software that is in any way comparable to using an MPC?

I'd probably get one from ebay if I did decide to get one at all, is this a good option or would people recommend getting one new or from another 2nd hand dealer?

If you think you may want to do this get down and really research the equipment you want to buy. There is SOOO much info available online. After 1hr of research you will have learned way more than you would expecting a spoonfed answer from a forum. Also, this forum has tons of info, use the search feature and you will be able to determine for yourself what is the best option.

No offence but I don't think you read my post, I don't see how youtube videos can help answer my specific queries.

and for the record the reason I suggest research over asking for answers is to avoid the fights that usually pop up when opinions are involved. This way you buy the right gear and dont end up regretting it in 2 months. Peace.

you can sample anything you want radio, ipod, computer, tv, dvd, vcr, ANYTHING WITH AUDIO ! u dont NEED a turntable, (some people will argue though). what he was sayin was if you youtube "MPC 1000" and see how people get their samples, see how they rework the samples and notice how they put everything from the drums to the melody together, you will see if u really want to be into it or not, and u'll know if its gonna sit and collect dust. Me personally , i would say get a used 1000 and learn the hell out of it. best of luck

Yeah, I was thinking anyway, they pretty much hold their value so if it didn't work out then I could probably chuck it back on ebay and get back what I payed, right?

if u get a 1000, u wont want to put it back on ebay ...FYI i payed $550 with maxed out RAM, and a 2 gig memory card half filled with samples already .

I've answered a lot of my questions (and thought of even more!) looking on this forum tonight. So thanks.

Question I have is about the pads. This seems to be quite a big issue with MPC 1000s, am I right? As in, they seem to be some crappy pads on them. So which ones are good? I've seen the blue and red MPCs and the black ones on ebay, are these the only two models? And which one has the good pads?

Man I think this pad thing is so overrated... I have the regular pads and I have no problems with them... Cats just find something to complain about... Be a glass half full type of guy instead of a half empty guy... Just go to a guitar center and play with them and see what feels better to you... Make your own chose instead of following all the copycats... Its like the guys that go to forums to complain about some dumb shit and then a million other cats start to agree to feel down. I own a MPC 1000 and its definitely not the same pads as a MPC 2000XL or whatever... but I havent had any responsive problems as of yet...

some pad censors had issues more so in the blue and red version. ...just like some cars are lemons and some . i have a black 1000 with original pads and they work just fine, no problem at all.

youtube videos is what sold me on the mpc. i probably spend more time watching videos than i spend on the mpc. i thought that i would be totally lost when i finally got my mpc, but i really think that watching so many videos of people doing their thang on the mpc has helped my learning curve alot.

if watching other people bang away on their mpc's doesnt make you wanna pimp out your girlfriend so you can get one yourself.... i dunno.
