E-Mu MO'Phatt - Is it worth it? [Please help]

Hi!

I'm looking for a nice synth that would give me bass sounds that I could use in my beats, I wont really use it for nothing else...

The question is is the E-Mu Mo'Phatt worth buying? I can have it for 200$ with shipping in vg+ condition...

I would like to have bass sounds like those that Pete Rock or DJ Premier have (I know that the mostly have basses from samples, but sometimes they play their own shit)

I would say so, I'm looking into trying to find one of those myself. If you can get one, by all means do so, can't really go wrong with it.

100% worth the buy, but don't just use the presets...TWEAK IT! and you'll love it.

Why not? Its good for more than just basses though. Lots of drums and other stuff to tweak.

i see that you have a 950, so that could be an answer.
theres tons of synth disks for the 900 / 950. use the filter and you will have mad bass.

It has like a funky 12mb of ROM. Basically 75 various patches and 76 drum samples.

DO NOT PURCHASE IT! If anything I'd suggest the Roland JV2080 because it comes with over 300 patches and and 15 drum kits. SECONDLY it has 8 expansion slots. They're going for a minimum of $225.00 on ebay. You gonna be pissed with the Mo Phatt. DONT DO IT!

I've had a Mo Phatt for over a year and I never really used it. Most of it's sounds are very cheesy. Think early 90's R&B and Pop Hop. It has a few nice bass sounds and that is all I feel it's good for.

If you are going to spend money on a module I wouldn't get a cheese factory like the Mophatt, even if all you want it for is bass. You won't find even an attempt at a realistic sounding patch. You can find bass samples on the internet that are comparable or better. You will still have to put in a lot of work to get a Mo Phatt bass sounding right with an MPC beat.

$200+ isn't worth a couple useable patches. It might be worth it for a more diverse module. Once you get into adding bass from modules you start wanting to add other sounds even just little touch up sounds, and the Mo Phatt just doesn't offer much that wouldn't sound really dated.

I'd see if you could find a korg trinity rack, not only have great bass sounds (there is a patch called rap bass with vinyl distortion !) but the drum kits on that thing are really thumpy thump.

anyone that says the mophat is cheasy doesnt know how to use it. and that 12mb thing. come on man. at least research what your talking about before you start giving advice to somebody on a forum. the mo comes with 32mb of roms. 4 banks, 127 patches in each bank. thats 508 stock patches. those are the specs. the sounds are good and very workable if you actually use the 12 assignable knobs on the front to tweak the sounds. its actually 4 knobs with a button that cycles through 3 modes. you can get one on ebay for a buck fifty. and its very expandable just like the jv2080.

To avoid further confusion the Planet Phatt is old (1997), the Mo' Phatt is newer (2000) and then there's the Turbo Phatt.

The Mo' Phatt sounds are also available as an expansion ROM for Proteus class synths and keyboards, in which case it is referred to as Pure Phatt ROM.

The Phatt soundset was upgraded for the 2000 models.

On a serious note most of the sounds ARE cheesy.

Tweak all you want. I know I have. There is also a lot more you can do in the menus and sub menus not just the knobs on front which more or less adjust pitch and filter setting. Doesn't take away the fact you are just tweaking cheese.

However there are a couple bass patches that are official. Also a lot of the patches, and it sounds like there is a lot, are in fact the exact same as many others but it's a different patch cause it has different fx and filter settings. You will spend alot of time scrolling through basically the same exact cheesy shit but with slight variations. I'm serious.

A bunch of stereotypical sounds that get used in commercials where a white dude in a tie will be rapping to his son about cereal is basically what you will get and you will have to tweak that into dopeness.
