Master output level to -6db

To what extend does the Master output level affects the mix?
Is that nothing but just volume?

What I have noticed is it depends on how much of a mix you are doing inside the 5k and where you are sending the output signal.
The mixer or interface that is receiving the signal also plays into how well the various output settings work.
