Don't get misleaded by those whistles, this is still just a controller.
I like when people try to add the cost of a PC/Mac in reference to a new piece of software/midi controller as if people dont already own a PC/Mac. That is the reason why these products are getting made. This isn't 2001, computer music is a popular as ever and to the people who are already knee deep in their DAW setup, the only added cost is the Maschine itself. I am willing to bet no more than 15% of this forum (or any music production forum) DOES NOT record to a DAW. Fact is, most songs are not completed within the mpc/mv8800/ASR anymore. Now, tell me why you wouldn't market to DAW users.
Good points made, but still you're missing a few.
1. Everybody is using a DAW. I do. But the big difference between this MASCHINE and my choice over the MP is that when I bought the XL, I didn't had to upgrade my PC at the same time. I just continued using Audition 1.5 to record stuff.
With this MASCHINE, I'll def need to make some upgrades on my PC in order for it to be able to run smooth and host enough whistles around. And I bet that more than half in this forum will need a PC upgrade too if they buy this thing.
2. Resale value of this thing: close to zero. After two years it will meet the fate of every other software application. And this is more serious, since it is a dedicated controller for a dedicated app. However, if NI keeps on developing on the same hardware platform, then they might save some of its value. But still, it's nowhere close to the resale value of my MP's.
3. It will always be dependent on a PC/Mac for the very basic thing it is made to do: music. I am only dependent on my PC when the tracking time comes around. Normally, I have my PC shut down around 70% of the time I am making beats on the MP's.
These 3 points are more than enough for me to stick around hardware grooveboxes.
