MPC = RMA with much sadness

Guys, I am very sad. I shipped my MPC back.

I hadn't been this excited about a new piece of gear in a long time...


The issues I had after only having it 3 days... I could not take it any longer.

I know with anything there has to be the expectation of bugs or shortfalls of the system. Given that, I looked past most of them.

(Most reasons I got from sellers on E-bay as to the reason they were selling... "The thing is just to buggy or complicated.")

But I can't spend approx 2500$ on a device and not be able to integrate it with my PC.

For what I am trying to do, it is CRITICAL that I be able to use the MPC with my PC and it be STABLE

AKsys is just entirely to buggy.

Now if this was the only thing I had to make music. It would be GREAT. A friend of mine has a 2000 model. He loves it. That's all he has and he is able to do some cool things with it.

This forum is an invaluable tool and it was starting to feel like family to me.

I've had my 4000 over two years,and i've never used Akai Sys. I still like to sample sounds the old fashioned way. As far as the 4000 being buggy,maybe you expected too much out of the machine. I have gigs of sounds either I sampled or from cd rom,and I've never had a problem. But oh well it's not for everyone. Good luck on your next purchase.

Same here......I have had my 4000 for a year or two and never had the urge to use akysys!.......I have downloaded it just to get a preview but that was it.....I uninstalled it!

~I thought the new os fixed most of the 4k problems! Im sorry to hear that u sent the 4k back. I hear the 4k is a beast maybe u didnt give it enough time! Hope u get a mpc u like that fits u!

And OS 1.51 isnt "to buggy" and ive never had problems doing my thing.

My Aksys is rock solid with XP.

How could you give a machine with so much to learn 3 days.

Most stores give you 45 days to determine if you want to keep a machine.

I would have sent my Fantom XR back if that was the case.

It took me a week to get the X editor ( It's like Aksys) to work.

I even crashed my OS trying to install it.

Talking about pissed.

But two months later I have found the synth engine and sampler to be ridiculous.

3 days. I don't know about that one.

Yeah. I'm starting to think this is the problem with his MPC-Aksys.

Last year I upgraded from GirlFriend 1.0 to Wife 1.0 and found that it's a memory hog, leaving very little system resources available for other applications. I am also now noticing that Wife 1.0 is spawning Child Processes which are further consuming valuable resources. No mention of this particular phenomena was included in the product brochure or the documentation, although other users have informed me that this is to be expected due to the nature of the application. Not only that, Wife 1.0 installs itself such that it is always launched at system initialization, where it can monitor all other system activity. I am finding that some applications such as PokerNight 10.3, BeerBash 2.5, and PubNight 7.0 are no longer able to run in the system at all, crashing the system when selected (even though they always worked fine before). During installation, Wife 1.0 provides no option as to the installation of undesired Plug-Ins such as MotherInLaw 55.8 and BrotherInLaw Beta release. Also, system performance seems to diminish with each passing day. Some features I'd like to see in the upcoming wife 2.0:

A "Don't remind me again" button

Minimize button

An install shield feature that allows Wife 2.0 be installed with the option to uninstall at anytime without the loss of cache and other system resources.

An option to run the network driver in promiscuous mode, which would allow the systems hardware probe feature to be much more useful.

A friend of mine decided to avoid the headaches associated with Wife 1.0 by sticking with Girlfriend 2.0. Even here, however, he found many problems. Apparently you cannot install Girlfriend 2.0 on top of Girlfriend 1.0. You must uninstall Girlfriend 1.0 first. Other users say this is a long standing bug that he should have known about. Apparently the versions of Girlfriend have conflicts over shared use of the I/O port. You'd think they would have fixed such a stupid bug by now. To make matters worse, the uninstall program for Girlfriend 1.0 doesn't work very well, leaving undesirable traces of the application in the system. Another thing- all versions of Girlfriend continually pop up little annoying messages about the advantages of upgrading to Wife 1.0.

BUG WARNING

Wife 1.0 has an undocumented bug. If you try to install Mistress 1.1 before uninstalling Wife 1.0, Wife 1.0 will delete MSMoney files before doing the uninstall itself. Then Mistress 1.1 will refuse to install, claiming insufficient resources.

BUG WORK-AROUNDS

To avoid this bug, try installing Mistress 1.1 on a different system and never run any file transfer applications such as Laplink 6.0. Also, beware of similar shareware applications that have been known to carry viruses that may affect Wife 1.0. Another solution would be to run Mistress 1.0 via a UseNet provider under an anonymous name. Here again, beware of the viruses which can accidentally be downloaded from the UseNet.

yo AK.Sys is real buggy and there a re a few basic things that are not implemented (like a copy/paste button, everything has to be dragged to work)

but the 4000 with 1.51 works perfectly fine for me

maybe 3 days is too short a period to really understand how it works, I think you should have kept it longer...

No but seriously, i think you should keep it for like at least a week or two before making that decision. I have the XL so I don't know that much about the 4k tho but still..

I had my 4000 for a year come Aug04 and a 2000XL before that. Maybe if you are still incline to use a MPC try your production out with a MPC 1000. It a basic model and its easier to work with a computer for transferring data. And keep your head up who knows you may be back here next year after you got some experience under your belt. This was a great experience to learn from and built with others. For me the 4000 is a great machine, but I REALLY DIDN`T START TO MASTER IT UNTIL JAN of this year through practice, practice, and self study about all the information I didn`t know.

In the beginning I bought a professional machine, but I wasn`t at the experience level I needed to be to use it. It took a lot of patience and perservance to built my skill up enough to use it decently.

As Cheech says whatever you decide to do, do it well.
