Eh, that sucks. I wanted to be able to buy the newest one i could. There has to be a system to it, tho...

I save and turn mine off every like 2 hours and just edit and work on stuff on my computer to let it cool off cuz I get worried

yo...that shit is a bit scary...obviously these things are getting REALLY hot in some cases, and in others hardly at all...i have mine propped up on a bit of an angle, but there's no way that would account for the fact that it only gets slightly warm...someone that's experiencing the problem should contact akai

be wary of keeping your cf card in while it is hot because from my experience it will warp the card after some time

Not all serial numbers work like that, some have the random number thing followed by the month, year. For example: 356793637/07/04
But they may not include the back slashes ("/") in between the numbers so you would have to know what you're looking at!

It might be worth contacting Akai to find out how you can work out the age of the unit by looking at the serial number.

i never noticed my 1000 getting hot but then again i don't leave it on for days or anything like that. 2-4 hour periods of time

my mpc1000 doesn't get too bad. It seems to stay warm but not overheat.

My laptop on the other hand... wow... its a sony with an i5 processer. I have it pretty well ventilated with room for air to circulate completely under it. I can't even keep it on my lap it gets so hot. Its only about a year old too.
