Its always nice to have options....but why would you want to update via hard drive when it is easier to do this with the CF card?

Because not all 5k's come with a CF card.

But all 5k's have a hard drive.

Thus it would be easier to make updates via the Hard drive but have CF card as an option...

I see. But CF cards are less than $10 and sold at every location that sells computer related media. So having the option to load an OS from the hard drive would be cool but once you purchase a CF card, there is no need to use a hard drive for updates.

Why waste time and money getting a CF card, when we can use whats already in the unit?

I can see if you had to purchase the HD seperately. But its already there! Make use of it! Right?

Furthermore with an 80GB HD and USB 2.0, you shouldn't need a CF card. Even if it was free! It's just a resource that could have been used elsewhere on the unit.

Oh well. still a great machine!!!

I guess I look at things differently. Since I have owned computers for the past 7 years that came with CF card drives installled and owned the MPC 2500...I have numerous CF cards around the house. It has never been an issue for me. But its not about me. Its obvious that there will be MPC 5000 users that don't have $7 for a CF card or don't live near an electronic store...so having this function would be nice

Well, first off, when I got a partner thats off on tour and his major record label sends him a MPC 5000 from their equipment budget, that doesnt include all thats its supposed to, and he needs to update the OS, the only option he has is only a CF Card? I had to agree with him when he said it was dumb, so that should definitely be an option if possible in an update. If he was able to do it from his HD, he could just sync up his Mac and MPC, then go from there.

and if his mac dies, he's really Screwed!!!

In that case, a $7 CF card from Jahrome will def come in handy

nah but seriously, lets make this an option Akai/Numark. OPTIONS ARE GOOD!!!

For now....he can tell his A&R to make sure that the MPC 5000 is updated prior to sending it to him...or include a CF card with it. While we are at it...why stop at the hard drive. Why not an option to update via CD...but then again, if cats are having a hard time getting a $7 CF card, then they will certainly have issues with installing a $150 CD drive..unless they buy from VST Service

well maybe the hard drive is not bootable... that would make it impossible to install an OS from it most likely... I am not sure how it works on the 5k (because I am not sure how the bios is setup)

When installing an OS, your storage must be bootable so the machine can turn on and perform the task...

the MPC is most likely set up to first check the flashcard reader, and then the cd drive for media before it goes and checks the rom for an OS to load (assuming the OS is held on some sort of onboard rom chip type of thing) it may not have the option to check the HDD for something before installing the OS, and if it did... you would have to remove it from the hard drive after installation unless you felt like canceling the installation every time you power up your machine (if that is even possible)

I removed the CF card to see if I can get it to look other places for the OS. If a CF card is not installed, it appears you can update via MIDI. If I recall correctly, the MPC 4000 uses this method..no?

Uhm, they have more important things to worry about.

You would think that since you can do autoloads from the HD, that it would be possible to make it boot from the HD as well.... it wouldnt be as big of an issue if they would have included the $7 CF Card that Akai said was packaged in the first place.
