I tried searching for these answers through pages of conflicting info and I couldn't find anything definite about any of them. I am now definitely confused though. So If someone wouldn't mind, could I get a simple answer, or 3?

Are programs made from OS2 compatible with OSXL problem free?

Is OSXL, actually free if you already have OS2?

Can I switch back and forth from OS2 and OSXL?

Thanks for taking the time.

absolutely not. MPC2K500, what have you been smoking? maybe there was a misunderstanding...

you can open an OS 2 project in OS 2XL but it will sound different or even completely messed up.

the filters are different in 2XL plus some other stuff is missing. check the JJ page:

There is not Q-REAL of a grid.
There is no mixer automation.
There is no start offset of an audio track.
Q- Link can be set only to an active track. (It cannot be set as a pad)
There is not "Extra Audio Play".
A note variation does not work except the screen of MAIN, SLIDER, TRACK MUTE, and NEXT SEQ.

also, you can only have one type of q-link variation active at a time (either realtime or note on, but not both).

if you have a project in OS 2 you should keep it / finish it in OS 2 and use 2XL for new projects if you get it.

1, About the relation between a PAD number and a sequence note number.

At AKAI OS, JJ-OS-Ver3.09, JJ-OS1, and JJ-OS2, the note number of a PAD number pair sequence is as follows by the default.

Image

The program has this conversion table.
This conversion table can be rewritten by the user.
This is development of software with the big burden. The PAD pair sequence note number of XL is fixation.

Image

It was produced by old OS. When a sequence is loaded to XL, the note number of a sequence is changed as follows.
In this case, MIDI OUT The note number carried out will also change.

In the case of TRACK TYPE = DRUM

Image

If a PAD number is changed without changing a note number, PAD will come apart.
It becomes impossible to use a program. When the type of a track is MIDI, the note number of a sequence remains as it is.
Therefore, a note pair PAD number is as follows.
Although MIDI OUT is normal, the pronunciation of an internal sound source comes apart.

In the case of TRACK TYPE = MIDI.

Image

If a note number is changed without changing a PAD number, a note will come apart.
It becomes impossible to use a sequence.

2. It is possible to load the sequence produced by XL and a program by AKAI OS, JJ-OS-Ver3.09, JJ-OS1, and JJ-OS2.

But there is an incompatible portion.

Example.
Main screen.
TYPE (DRUM, MIDI, AUDIO) is not displayed normally.

PROGRAM.
The value of AMP Velocty->Attack will change. (AKAI OS, JJ-OS-Ver3.09, OS1) .

SEQUENCE.
There is not compatibility of a note variation and Q-LINK real-time data.

3. Q- Link slider can be set only to an active track. (It cannot be set as a pad)

Q-Link slider will not work, if the AFTER key is not ON (the LED is lit).
Moreover, please turn OFF (the LED is turned off) the AFTER key, when the sequence on which note variation data is recorded is playback.
When the AFTER key is ON (the LED is lit), the note variation data currently recorded is not played back.
Q4 is used when a note variation is set as Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4. (Q1, Q2, and Q3 does not work in this case)
Q3 is used when a note variation is set as Q1, Q2, and Q3. (Q1 and Q2 does not work in this case)
Q2 is used when a note variation is set as Q1 and Q2. (Q1 does not work in this case)
Example 1: When TUNE is set as Q1 and LPF is set as Q2, only LPF of Q2 works. TUNE of Q1 does not work.
Example 2: When TEMPO or MIDI CC is set as Q1 and LPF is set as Q2, both TEMPO or MIDI CC of Q1 and LPF of Q2 work.
Note variation = TUNE, LPF CUTOFF, BPF CUTOFF, HPF CUTOFF, LAYER, ATTACK, DECAY, S.START, S.END, CHOP, VELOCIT

In addition, behavior of CUTOFF was changed.
OLD OS is a value of value + Q-Link of a program.
XL does not use the value of a program.
Only the value of Q-Llink is used.

How come I can only add 3 drum samples to a pad in OS2XL?
I used to rock JJOS1 and have up to 4 kicks on 1 pad to make it bang. I had a couple of programs with some of the nicest kicks in em.
Now they messed up.

Anyone know how to help me out, or should I just track all my OS1 beats with OS1 and move on on OS2XL.

Btw: Loving the Nondestructive Chop, so nice chopping drums with this!

I would like to upgrade to OS2XL. All of my work on the mpc so far has been pretty simple. Mostly my beats consist of a few drum and instrument samples, with a few midi tracks on a 4/4 bar loop. I have not song moded any beats in it yet, and other than a few LPF, HPF filters applied to a few tracks here and there, I have not used to many other settings or features as of yet.
Would it be within reason to make a copy of my 20 or so pieces of work, open them up in OS2XL, and try to convert them? Am I looking at a major project here, or will this be fairly simple to do?

the only way to know for sure is try it and see. each one might require a different amount of work.

keep in mind also that os 2xl is still in a state of flux regarding features, so some things may change in the future.

Right on Sooty, thanks. Knowing me I will be testing sooner than later. :P One more thing though, when switching back and forth from OS2 to OS2XL, if my understanding is correct you do it from loading the actual bin file in the memory card instead of holding down stop when turning the machine on, correct?
