Dead Function buttons and direction buttons

hey guys ive had my mpc1000 for about 6months now and just today my F2 and F5 buttin dont respond at all and and a couple of my directional buttons are no good as well. How do i go about fixing this without ruining my mpc?

would i need completely new buttons or would it just need adjusting etc etc ?

any tips or instructional videos rthat are out there would be very handy

9 times out of ten the tact switch is bad. they are relatively cheap but require you to do some soldering.

where can you get these switches from ?

its probably going to be ebay. you can check vstservice.com, mpcstuff.com and also contact akai direct if you need info on the actual switch.

How easy is the soldering job? I have the same problem.

with some simple tools it is a very basic and easy job. a low wattage iron, de-solder braid or sucker, solder, and the new tacts.

completely remove the board that houses the tacts you need to replace. flip it upside down to expose the contacts. use the braid to remove all the solder from the contact points. there will be four for each switch. after this the old one will simply come off the board. insert new switch and solder all the contacts. put the heat to the post and contact when reinstalling the new switch. and apply the solder to the oposite side of the contact. keep the time that you put the iron on the contact to a minimum. 3-5 seconds. thats you lesson for the day.

ok im attempting to do it myself tnite, wat im going to do is for noe, take the track mute and numeric switches and use them for my F5 and left arrow buttons, as i dont use the trk mute and numeric buttons for my music, is it just the tact swicth i should replace or should i replace the tiny green thing above it too ?

How big is the risk for screw ups?

Installing the pad upgrade/ ram without a prob, but this sounds too technical for me. Problem is I don't know where I can have it fixed.

green thing is the led light. leave it alone. from a tech aspect its not dificult at all. from an amature stand point it may prove to be dificult. anybody with basic soldering skilz in your area can do it. just take the board out and hit up your local electronics store to hit up the help about a side job.

to take the board out completely, there is a blue wire from underneath the pads to the board where the shift button is, how do you un-do that, looks like its stuck on pretty good ??

all cables should be on conecters. they should just pull apart

if you have somewhat decent soldering skills or at least patience and knowhow its quite easy. but you have to make sure you have the right tools before you attempt this.

as described before.

low wattage iron (30 watts or less) any hotter and you can burn your board easily.
desolder braid or solder sucker - this is very important. it makes taking off the old solder and completely removing it a breeze.

and if you look in the mpc 2500 section look for the thread i made (installing rotary jog wheel) there are two youtube videos i saw the other day that explain how to replace one of the pots (the rec gain pot) and the guy has these two little black hook like objects that he got in an electronic kit. i recommend those (i need to get a set) to easily pry and pull off the connectors that connect to the pcb board. this is also important because taking off the pcb board entirely will make soldering and desoldering etc. very very easy.

i also recommend buying brand new tact switches instead of using other tact switches for buttons you may not use. this way it keeps all of the buttons across the board working. also i recommend buying a few extra tact switches to have around just in case as spares.


i had no solder experience when i first fixed a jog wheel encoder on the mpc 2kxl, it was a pain and i had to do it twice because i didnt do it correctly the first time. but i had patience and carefulness that helped me not screw it up. good luck and any other questions just ask.

Ok guys so i managed to do some soldering myself, what i did was replace the 2 dead swictes with 2 i dont use , however i will get new switches now so they all work, and now when i turn it back on, it goes straight into a boot up mode and starts loading up like this:

Pass1 - 100%
Pass2 - 100%
Pass3 - 100%
Pass4 - 100%

Whats going on with this, how do i stop it from booting this way everytime i turn the mpc on????
