Does anyone have this module and if so how the hell do I set it up so I can get the sounds sequenced in the 5000? I looked in both manuals and I still have no clue in getting things going with this. I have the midi cables in place, but, what else do I have to do to the MPC5000 and the Korg M3-M internally?

Hey [email protected],
I've gotten so far as to record midi into the 5000 but I steal am baffled on what to set in the M3 to get the module to keep the chosen sound on one track so when I go to another track with another sound it won't change the previous sound also. For example, if I record a harmonica on midi track 1a I would go to track 2a to record a flute but when I change the sound it changes track 1a to a flute also. Is there a setting that I have to set before I can even attempt this?

So there is no plages in the manual of the korg m3 that says how to assign each sound to a channel?

Please ask SCD, because when I had the 5k, I had issues setting up my motif xs8 to play different sounds on diff channels too. I thought i was going crazy

Either this is a bug, or I overlooked something...

Hey guys, you don't assign sounds in the M3 (or any midi module or keyboard for that matter). You send a program change from the 5000 to the M3 when you press play. That program change is saved in your 5000 sequence. The M3 just has to be in a multitimbral model that it receives midi on all 16 channels. So, you can have 16 tracks in your sequnce playing different sounds (via sending a program change) on the M3.

Where in the Korg manual is this explained? Because I must have overlooked it.

Well, I checked the M3 manual and it looks like simply putting it in Combi Mode will allow it to recieve midi data on 16 midi channels. So, I guess I would start there. As a Triton owner I personally use Song Mode because Combi in a Triton only allows you to recevei on 8 midi channels.

1. connect midi out A on the 5000 to the midi in of the M3
2. setup a 16 track sequence with track 1 set to MIDI 1A, track 2 to MIDI 2A...track 16 to MIDI 16 A

So on each track you should be able to send midi data to each of the 16 receivable channels of the M3. On every track you should be able to play the M3 with the pads.

Now to send a program change on each track... It's on page 31 in the manual.

1. Go to Program on the MAIN screen and dial til it says No. 1
2. Press WINDOW
3. turn ON transmit program changes
4. press close
5. now change No. 1 to other values. You should see the programs changing on the M3 screen for midi channel 1.

You can also set these values in the Program change window in case you need to set Bank MSB an LSB. This all gets saved (along with pan and volume setting in MIXER mode) in your sequence. So the next time you load your sequence and press play, it sends volume, pan and program changes to each receiving midi channel on the M3.

You can do all this if you have other modules or keyboards using midi port B, C and D. That's 64 external mdi channels...64 external sounds from keyboards or modules!

Oh, yeah, if you want to play from the M3 keyboard you 'd also have to connect midi out of the M3 to midi in 1 on the 5000. Then turn local OFF on the M3 so it doesn't play the M3 directly from the keyboard but rather sending it thru the 5000 and back to the M3.
