recommendation

can anyone recommend a fairly cheap digital or analoge mixing desk that works with cubase? preferably with a usb connection.

Most mixers with a USB connection also double as an audio interface/ soundcard. Is that what you want?

Some (M-Audio Projectmix, Digidesign 002 etc) also act as a mixer control surface for your DAW software giving total hardware/ software integration. Is that what you want?

Firewire based systems are more reliable and offer higher throughput (trackcounts) for demanding sessions. Is this what you want?

Decide how many channels you need and whether you're going digital or analogue, before you make a shortlist!

Do your research on your own first. Though I'm not taking anything away from the forums here, but your best bet to seeking answers to gear pros and cons and other gear preferences would be to subscribe to any of the available pro audio/instrument mags that are out. These type of mags feature some sort of monthly spotlight on anything from your fav s/w to h/w. At least this should help you get off your feet with this stuff and educate you as you go along.

I ended my subscriptions to about three mags after having them for about 2-3 yrs, and that's not counting the additional mags bought off the stand.

Bottom line...they schooled me on a lot of stuff, highly recommended.

do you think a M-Audio Project Mix I/O would work for me. think thats the kind of thing i'm after.

Depends...how many inputs do you need? And you'll need a FireWire card in your computer, too, because it's a FireWire unit.

I almost bought that ProjectMix but ended up getting a MUCH CHEAPER competing product, the TASCAM 1082 for under $600, because it had 8 inputs, which is all I needed.

Lord, the projectmix is a daw controller/audio interface and mixer. It's far beyond being just a mixer only. I had my eye set on grabbing one at one time but saw it as being an unneccessary buy.

It looks cool though.

Mixer for a good price with usb i would say Yamaha Mw12. Thats what i currently have but i have a Mackie Onyx 1220 coming tomorrow but thats a very expensiv mixer. It has firewire option but i already have a M-Audio firewire card.

yamaha 01x if you can find one...they're cheap and firewire! you can even chain two of these together.
