zuckwheat wrote:Well, I checked the M3 manual and it looks like simply putting it in Combi Mode will allow it to recieve midi data on 16 midi channels. So, I guess I would start there. As a Triton owner I personally use Song Mode because Combi in a Triton only allows you to recevei on 8 midi channels.

1. connect midi out A on the 5000 to the midi in of the M3
2. setup a 16 track sequence with track 1 set to MIDI 1A, track 2 to MIDI 2A...track 16 to MIDI 16 A

So on each track you should be able to send midi data to each of the 16 receivable channels of the M3. On every track you should be able to play the M3 with the pads.

Now to send a program change on each track... It's on page 31 in the manual.

1. Go to Program on the MAIN screen and dial til it says No. 1
2. Press WINDOW
3. turn ON transmit program changes
4. press close
5. now change No. 1 to other values. You should see the programs changing on the M3 screen for midi channel 1.

You can also set these values in the Program change window in case you need to set Bank MSB an LSB. This all gets saved (along with pan and volume setting in MIXER mode) in your sequence. So the next time you load your sequence and press play, it sends volume, pan and program changes to each receiving midi channel on the M3.

You can do all this if you have other modules or keyboards using midi port B, C and D. That's 64 external mdi channels...64 external sounds from keyboards or modules!

Thanks Zuchwheat! so let me make sure I'm getting this right.
In the M3 I need to do this:
2. setup a 16 track sequence with track 1 set to MIDI 1A, track 2 to MIDI 2A...track 16 to MIDI 16 A

So on each track you should be able to send midi data to each of the 16 receivable channels of the M3. On every track you should be able to play the M3 with the pads.

And in the 5K I need to do this:
1. Go to Program on the MAIN screen and dial til it says No. 1
2. Press WINDOW
3. turn ON transmit program changes
4. press close
5. now change No. 1 to other values. You should see the programs changing on the M3 screen for midi channel 1.

Dang it Zucky... you aight by me.... question though...how can I get it to go thru other banks(such as A,B,C, D etc... Like some modules have more banks), and also past 128, or do all modules/workstations stop at 128 and go to a new bank? I hope you can understand my question

You will have to look through your synths documentation to find the MSB/LSB settings that will allow you to select banks directly from your MPC.

This is one reason why I wish a hardware sequencers could perform like software and import patch scripts. Patch Scripts contain all this information to include the names of each patch.

In MAIN screen, select the program number and press WINDOW. In this screen there is a Bank Select on/off switch where you can also set the MSB/LSB value to select various banks for your outboard gear.

Visit www.rolandus.com

You can find its patch script builder. This may help you find the MSB/LSB settings for certain instruments. It is primarily used for program such as Cubase so they can quickly pull up the patches in your external sound modules and keyboards.

I must have set something wrong because everytime I go to change a sound on the M3 it changes the 5K sequence also that I'm on. And I keep having to go back and correct the sequence. I don't know what I did wrong and I haven't even turned on the program change function let alone the bank MSB/LSB switch. I might need a video on this or something.

Go to MIDI/Sync mode, choose MIDI tab and set "Sequence Change by Program Change to OFF.

That way received PCs won't change your sequences by changing programs on your M3.

Maybe a short and plain explanation of MIDI messages, channels, Control Changes, Program Changes and the like, based on the usage of the 5k and extern modules etc. would help? Maybe it could be made a sticky or something? I am willing to write one but I will wait until OS 2 is out, since some things have changed in there (read: improved)

ray2002 wrote:Thanks Scd! That worked out for me! By the way how do I find out what right MSB/LSB to set so my module and 5K can remember what sounds to use for a particular sequence or song. Or will everything be automatically remembered when I save my sequences?

The right MSB/LSB depends on how it is implemented on the M3. The 5k remembers every setting you make on it, so there is no problem. You should really dive into your M3 manual to find out how bank select messages are organized.

I see! I will do some more research about that in the manual!
Thanks again, Scd!

Hey Ray, you shouldn't even have to touch the M3 (except to put it in multitimbral mode...which would be Combi I guess) It just sits there as waits for the 5000 to tell it what to do. You should never have to select a program ON the M3. The 5000 will select it by sending a program change #.

So all I would have to do is type in or scroll to the number of the sound I want to use from the 5K and the M3 should go directly to the that particular sound?
