Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I got another 2KXL in the mail today and the people I got it from off eBay listed it as "fully functional" and in "great working condition" .

First thing I noticed was that the OS floppy was broke . No problem . I DL'd another version dropped it on a floppy and stuck it in and it started up fine .

I start using it and next thing I know the one fcking button you probably use the most isn't working, the 'main screen' button . Then the more I test it out I find that the 'shift' button has to be almost leaned on to make it work and the F5 button isn't working at all .

So my question is that if the disc I put the OS on wasn't formated could that lead to the malfunctions (which I'm 99% sure that's not the case but I'm hoping by some fluke it is) or did I just get a bum MPC that the previous owner was a fckin' neanderthal beast w/ the way he used it ?

Was the OS loaded into the flash memory prior to you having to download?? You should have been able to plug the ish in, press the power button and the OS loads....If not, thats an indicator of possible damage....but not necessarily.

The buttons you mentioned are THE MOST USED on the XL....
If the shift button works, but you have to mash on it, its probably busted!! Also, without the main screen button, the XL is kind of useless......You would have to sample, trim, program, save then reboot the MP and load the samples you just chopped...Sorry, bro. Time to crack her open and clean out all the contacts!!

I was thinking about that flash memory myself because every other XL I've ever used didn't need a starting disc so I thought that was weird in the 1st place . And I know exactly what you're saying about those buttons, I had a 2K classic for about 12 years . But I treated it w/ respect and didn't have any issues w/ my buttons 'til the end .

What do you mean about cleaning out contacts ? Is this a simple fix or am I gonna have to send it to Forat ? And does Forat even service 2KXL's ? I hear all of the 3000 & 60 guys talking about using his services but not the guys on here .

If you feel technically inclined, open up the top casing, remove all the buttons and pads and get some q-tips, some contact cleaner, and some compressed air and go to town. You might be surprised at how much crap is in there..
There is a dude who posted a thread called "sneak peak into my customizations" or something like that. There are pics in that thread of him removing the top casing and everything, so follow the pics and hopefully with a good cleaning everything will work nice.
If that doesnt work and you arent comfortable playing w/ a soldering iron, Forat or VST might be able to help you, but be prepared to pay out the AZZ!!

I read in the off topic that the xl is fully expanded other than the eb16...If you were willing, Id buy the 8 outs off of you. Or, if you want Ill buy the whole unit, repair it, take the 8 outs and sell it back to you for the same price. Let me know....
