Now it's back in the 5K with all of my sample library reloaded and it's not making excessive noise as it was before. I installed a new E/IDE cable also because my other connector had come a bit loose.

Quiet as a mouse now.

Ahh then that explains it then.. the noise you may have been hearing was probably due to fragmentation. It could have been the "readers" having to travel back and forth to read a single piece of data.

It's the type of vibration you only really notice when you think about it. Just wondering since the 4k gave you the spin down option. Should be a software controllable feature, no?

Thanks,

It should be, it was added to the 4k at the same time they made the disk tray become screen controlled.

Fan noise and drive noise can be easily baffled by an environment, that along with the difference in hearing would easily make the difference in some are hearing it and some are not.
All and all the 5k is pretty quiet and you do occassionally hear (or feel) either the drive cycling or maybe a change in fan speed?
Just drop Akai a line about it to get there response.

Now that interesting.
I wonder if Akai could add a Defrag to the 5k?
The 4k had one but it was actually for the 512mb.

Curious what % of your drive would you say you have used and had you done a lot of deleting on the drive prior to this?

Say... approx 50% of HDD used for sample library and another 20% for HD tracks - yes lots of record and deletion action going on ...
