The worst I've experienced with a low battery is deccreased processing and save/load performance. My backlight or any other LED was not affected.

The true defination of a short circuit is a direct phase to phase connection (phase to phase fault). The other fault would be a ground fault (phase directly connected to equipment grounding conducter or neutral). In both cases the circuit breaker would trip and the outlet would not be useable until the fault was fixed. If the mpc only flickered while it was plugged in, then the case would either be with the A/C adapter, power strip, or a loose nuetral connection within the outlet circuit.
With a loose nuetral connection the ungrounded conducter (the hot) loses reference to ground which results in wild voltage (anywhere between 20 to 200 volts in a 120 volt circuit).
To check the outlet, you could use a volt meter to check if you have the right voltage, or you can plug in a lamp and see if the light flickers. If the voltage fluctuates with the meter or the lamp flickers, it's probably a bad nuetral connection. The same testing method can be applied to a power strip.

If the backlight flickers while the mpc is both plugged in and on battery power, then this could very well be the problem. It could be with the backlight, a faulty resistor, bad capacitor, etc... Any problems with the electronics needs to be dealt with by an Akai technician.
Another thing to think about.... Since you recently did a pad modifcation, you might want to make sure that any ribbon cables are not loose or pinched. Good luck man, I hope you find and solve the problem.
