There are plenty of other (cheaper) options though. Just look for step sequencers, most drum machines have them. Check out the various Korg Electribe models, they might suit you better.

the schaltwerk is mine tho, i got it from a guy in england for silly cheap, who i guess was part of a famous band. i never heard of him tho. it has a newer OS in it than any other in the USA since it was sent to doepfer for servicing... it sequences my korg ex-800 atomahawk and my roland sh-101 so far. i think its all i need for analog synths at the moment.

the regelwerk & schaltwerk contain parts that are not FCC compliant, so you will never see another run unfortunately. i learned that earlier when i was considering getting rid of it and just using a midi>cv/gate box.

i guess the best thing about the schaltwerk is the interface... dancing lights. the worst thing is certainly the fact that it cant be slaved to an external tempo, itll always fall out of time. so it has to either be the master or independent. its really flimsy too.

yeah - probably a good rule of thumb to use: the worse the music in the demo, the better the gear!

that NI maschine pisses me off severely, tho. NI chickened out and made it so that you can't use it without a computer attatched. it's basically a glorified midi controller. or just a huge software dongle. pointless.

i'd REALLY love to see a sampler/sequencer that's like a Nord Modular: hook it up to your computer, edit/patch/tweak/assign/modulate/route/setup/etc.etc.etc... with a great software editor.

...THEN, unplug it and you can use it live without the computer. with a nice big lcd display & full functionality. nice pads & sliders. solidly built and compact. i'd buy it in a second.

the NI Maschine looked like that... until you got to the end & read the fine print. so dissapointing.

if i was rich, i'd buy one for sure.
1. just to see if i clicked with it.
2. to support a small company that makes such superb and different thinking hardware.

if you check out the genoqs forum, you see they are good with the support & firmware updates- incorporating a lot of user requests & things. the interface is quite ingenious. no menu diving - everything is just a click away.

you would have to spend a lot of time getting fluent with the octopus for sure, just like learning any other instrument. but once you got quick with it you could zoom around and just do insane sequencing stuff all in realtime.

nah i only even fingered it once. i havent heard any of what she is making with it either. yeah shes a little richer than your uncle brain for sure. hers is all black and gorgeous as hell. i felt like i was touching a piano or something. its heavy and massive. i imagine it would be cool to dick around on. oh well. i think theres plenty ways of doing things.

shes got a massive collection of vintage analog gear too tho so who better to own one i guess.

yeah the schaltwerk is made of a few very flimsy components bolted into an aluminum face plate. guess it could be worse.
