Love this forum but I'm a nerd hobbyist lurker so don't get all offended by my lack of depth or hardcore 'tude .
I have had a 500 since they came out. I love the concept. I love the feature set. I even love the quality (I've beat the hell out of mine and it still keeps on ticking).
BUT, (like Peewee Herman says, "Everyone always has a big butt")
I've struggled with being productive. I can't explain it very well...but I can't seem to break free and just enjoy making beats with it. It feels like work. Setting up programs, finding projects, navigating the various menus. It's always felt more like building rather than creating, or making the instrument rather than playing the instrument. At least for me.
Yesterday I went in to buy the new APC40 and walked out with the XR 20 (don't ask). Honestly I sort of felt like a tool, because the thing is clearly limited - AND I HATE that they wasted half the memory on preconstructed patterns.
On the other hand, this thing has seriously kicked off my creativity in a way that neither the 500 nor any DAW ever has. Ever. The drum sounds and 1-hits are awesome (synths not so much). There are only three tracks but I find myself doing so much more with them. It took about two hours to go completely through the manual and learn it. Now I just close my eyes and my fingers just take over. It's the experience I've always looked for.
Here's the funny thing. While I'm using it, I keep thing about how fricking cool my new beat would sound with a certain sample that I have stored on my 500. Or how cool it would be to chop up the beat a little differently or how I would really like to use a certain effect. And I realize I'm appreciating my 500 more, but in a totally different way.
Bottom line is I'm glad I have both. I think XR 20 is where I create it, and 500 is where I finish it up.
I'm pretty excited.

Sometimes I still laugh out loud about the beat kangz and that time some English dude hacked the Akai marketing website and stole a bunch of pictures of the Ren before it was released.
