always prime,it will make your colors pop..

without priming u might end up with a color less desirable than what u thought was gonna be..

with the gold i would use a light backer

and the black is fine alone...

spray from a greater distance than mentioned on the can and use a constant swipe motion to avoid runs

make sure to check ur parts in good light before you clearcoat them to see if there is any missed spots..

do in a ventilated area

and dont do it next to anything you dont want overspray on

one last thing
if you want ur gold to really look nice back it with a silver..

I will be dyeing my pads black first and, then I will start taking the buttons/wheels off to start spraying.

if I can get it how I have it in my mind, I should end up with something fairly decent.

Ohhh, very nice ! Well done ...

Mind you, with my 1000, I only intend to dye the pads, spray the ends gold and do a black and gold combination on the buttons and wheels ... I won't be touching the main black chasis of my 1000 at all ( I like it black ).


I will post it up once done, although I keep losing my nerve everytime I sit down to get started ( keep worrying that I will apply too much pressure to the buttons when trying to remove them and snap the things ! ). I will overcome this fear, though, and as my children are starting their half term break, I will have time on my hands to go to work on it.

i found the easiest way to remove the buttons was with a tiny eye glass screwdriver,,just do one side at a time and do it slow and near the bottom,,urs are fairly new compaired to my 2000xl's,,and only a few of them broke ,,but let me remind you,the person who had it before me,sent it to me with at least 12 broken buttons,,so far from well tooken care of(the buttons were more like "old" as compaired to being cheap plastic)(its actually pretty strong,and after painting,even stronger) ,,,so if i was you i wouldnt sweat it,,,do 1 and see how you feel about it,,,then do another,,and so on,,lol

For you guys that dyed your pads, with the rit dye used, did you have to put a certain amount of salt into the dye ?

as said, I couldn't get a rit dye, but rather a Dylon dye. The instructions states that it requires you to put a fair amont of salt into the hot water along with the dye ?
