Does anyone knows which is the programing language and Api in which the akai mpc 2000xl operating system is based on?

thanks.

I would say assembler or C/C++, not sure though

bruh... if you can do some JJ OS schit for the 2000XL... you will be a rich man!

would be cool if someone did that... i wonder how much space you have to store the OS on the mpc.

If the OS executable is about 340KB on the floppy I would say less than 512KB, but from what I know that is HUGE amount of memory

no offence but i think that it would be hard for you to write the OS for an mpc.
usually it takes months for people (team)who know the hardware from the inside.
you propably dont know a lot about its internal hardware structure, how to make all the blocks work for you as you want it to.
what I mean JJ OS is made by a person who propably worked or still works for akai as a programmer, thats where he got the source from and could make it work better for a user.

even during dissasemblying of the software, you would get some blocks of the source code but you could also get in trouble as it is reverse engineering and if you used some parts of the code into your OS you still can`t sell it because its copywritten as well as the akai mpc 2000/2000xl design itself.

the mpc 2000/2000xl is a computer based hardware so this should make
it a bit easier, still i don`t think you or anybody else could do it 'like that'.
its not the thing of waking up in the morning and saying,'today im gonna make my own mpc Operating system' IMO.
peace.

Hi im agree I think would be hard but more than hard time consuming, but I m not agree with you saying that no one can do it

the features of the mpc are quite easy to do in a language soft like max msp, collider, lisp ,small talk you name it ,even the new models are just more of the same thing.

about the copyright of the os nobody is saying will be sold to people, I personally want to enhance my beloved mpc and i was planing to add all kind of sensors etc to use my mpc as a midi controller which is basicly the way i use it now since the functionalities are quite obsolete for modern music making and dont get me wrong I REALLY LIKE MY MPC but i prefer now to use my lap top full of software like c sound and the like.

but still i like hardware I mean the only reason to use a hardware like an mpc is reliability on stage computers are quite unstable and nobody wants to stop the performance because of a lack of stability but the bad news are that the hardware companies like akai are still in the 80's and 90`s talking about technology and are trying to sell us their new units that are not giving anything new to the musicians and even they release their devices full of bugs so why to buy and unstable hardware that in the end is not giving you really much new in terms of music production speaking?

so that is the reason I thought about get my hands dirty with my mpc is still a nice midi controller but i felt it lacks sensitivity on the pads to play real multi sampled instruments like bfd is not really musical to play very low dynamics so i will add my own stuff to it but i was not planing to use the akai os and i dont really want to recreate the whole system

I mean why to build the whole system from scratch? i would rather continue producing with my mac.

Maybe what the jjos is doing is just using the volatile memory where the akai os is stored the same you use when you update your akai os from a flopy and you can build your own and store it there in place of the other but i dont really know how is he doing with the api etc. but thats not hacking the os is just a replacement but i can not say he is doing that because i have not dig into it really.

but at some point i felt like willing to give it a try and check if i can just break the os and use their own os so that way i dont need to build all from scratch wich is useless to my point of view very personal point of view ofcourse because i prefer to build something new than copy something else i can do in another system(talking about modern tools to make music) and if that is more less possible why not add some things like to be able to read a modern hard disk for example? so i can keep using my mpc wich i really like.

I definitely wont bother buying the new ones ,are quite expensive and not really an step forward so maybe i will keep digging on this and try to do something about it

All kind of devices could be hacked a movile, computers etc etc some are more difficult than others and the point is if it is really worthy to do it in this case the mpc i mean would be nice but i dont need the akai os just some functionalities as midi controller but still if is not that hard why not?

would be fun the take a look at that code anyway. so if anyone have some info that wants to share about it is welcome the think will be to share info and not to argue if is possible or not but to find a way so we can say to akai we are not buying your product if you are not giving us something really worthy to buy :)

anyway the last thing i want to do is to sound pretentious about this issue but im convinced that with hard work and
some collaboration all is possible.

so will see what happen in few months take care all.

jjos is built on illegal code. and is sold. for profit. and the only reason that was done is because the source code was availible to the programer. reverse engineering is all but impossible. and if you dont have the proper security protacalls in the firmware it wont even install it. but good luck.

i somehow doubt there is much security protocols in the OS... it;s not like anyone else makes a machine that the software can be installed on. anyone wanting to pirate it would install it on an akai machine anyways... top it off the official software is free off the website.

the security is in the source coding... it is proprietary so they dont include the source which would grant alterations.

yeah i think the installation part is the challenge, the os doesnt look so complicated I have seen copies of this kind of software that some guys programed just for the pleasure of recreate an mpc on a computer, so maybe is not about reverse the engineering is maybe more about to build your own i mean to build the utilities and all that and then just use the limitations of the hardware as base for your os.

there is also the way since the os of mpc can be overwrited easy from a floppy just the installation is the part that is the most difficult maybe. mmm yeah..

The dubious part about that jjos is that ok he got and use the original code from akai but that is completely illegal and he is also making money wich is even worst in the sense that is making profit of something that belongs to a well established company so then why akai is not doing something about it?(wich is cool because looks useful to the users)

this makes me think that if they are not doing that, is maybe because they cant do it since the os is completely different and they cant claim is their code so if this is the case he is doing only what im suggesting just overwriting the os

if he is really using the original source and if he is not being punished hahaha wich nobody wants that :)
then something even more tricky is behind that, The only way to use a copyrighted material is that the company make it open source or normally (im not sure about how is in software) a copyrighted material last for a few years and after that you have to renovate the copyright if dont then becomes of the public domain meaning anyone can
use it
I dont know guys but im quite sure that if a worker steals something of the company he was working that looks like would be a big trouble and this guy is happily making money with out worry about any legal issues apparently so that`s the part that really admire then, how is he doing to be out of trouble using and selling in and open way a copyright material of someone else?.

just like in music if the artist doesn't renew the copyright becomes public domain and everybody can use it and sample it

anyway i hope more people write useful comments otherwise will be a really boring discussion

take care all.:)

here is some inside info from wikipedia

ROM images

Main article: ROM image

The contents of ROM chips in video game console cartridges can be extracted with special software or hardware devices. The resultant memory dump files are known as ROM images, and can be used to produce duplicate cartridges, or in console emulators. The term originated when most console games were distributed on cartridges containing ROM chips, but achieved such widespread usage that it is still applied to images of newer games distributed on CD-ROMs or other optical media.

ROM images of commercial games usually contain copyrighted software. The unauthorized copying and distribution of copyrighted software is usually a violation of copyright laws (in some jurisdictions duplication of ROM cartridges for backup purposes may be considered fair use). Nevertheless, there is a thriving community engaged in the illegal distribution and trading of such software. In such circles, the term "ROM images" is sometimes shortened simply to "ROMs" or sometimes changed to "romz" to highlight the connection with "warez".

this same rom memory is where the mpc store the os so is possible to extract as you can read, difficult yes i thinks so,but here there is info that suggest the possibility also.

you can read also the copyright issue i said before also and just is the beginning i mean just a quick search and there is alredy some info I `ll keep looking.

AKAI never hunted down JJ cause they made a HUGE profit from the guy by simply selling tons of 1k's and 2.5k's which in the realm of the o.g. AKAI OS would have easily been abandoned by everyone.

The 2kXL however is a totally different story. If a new OS emerges, this will immediately cut massive amounts from NUKAI's revenue as they do not manufacture these units anymore.

Just imagine a 2kxl with half the JJ utilities and place it against a 1k. Which one will you buy (forget the RAM size)?

I completely agree with you with that fact.

I dont, because the only revenue that akai makes from the 2000xl is the name. They dont get a cut when you sell your xl on ebay.
