OS 1.2

Hello to all!
I've been following this forum for quite a while now, and I must say... It is THE sh#t!!
Anyways, I am a proud 2000XL owner. Been using zips for years, and recently I realized it was time for an upgrade. I've always been running 1.14, and lately, I bought a CF card reader (from cimple spares) which requires 1.2. Went to town, got some floppies, got 1.2, came back home, tried to load it... BAM!! Floppy's recognized, but TYPE: ????? So here I am, desperate... looking for a helpful hand. Thanks a lot.

You maybe have to format the card with MPC before it works correctly.

Yep, gotta format the card first. People recommend formatting in the PC. Some say that if u format in the mpc, the pc reader wont recognize the card.

Thanks for the help famz! However, even after trying different kind of formatting (pc & mpc), the floppy cannot be read. Weird... Anyway, if someone has another idea, holla!!! Peace.

Oh I thought you were referring to the compact flash card.

Here is what I did when I upgraded from floppy to mcd. I went to office depot and purchased a 10 pack of floppies, they come formatted so I didn't have to do a single thing to it. I have an old PC with a floppy drive so I simply inserted a floppy disk into the drive, opened my computer folder, selected the floppy (A:) drive. Then I simply dragged the extracted OS bin file from my desktop to the A: drive folder.

From there all you gotta do is place the floppy into the MPC and load the bin file.

If I recall correctly, the first disk I tried didn't want to work...turn out that was due to the disk having the read me files on it. You might have to open the OS folder on your desktop and drag only the bin file to the floppy disk.

BTW... I've heard the MCD kit works with 1.14...I had upgraded my machine from 1.12 to 1.2

Thanks digital022 for your input... I did try what you mentioned above... No luck... I'm to the point where I:
1) either need to get/buy a proper working floppy/zip with 1.2 from someone or somewhere, or
2) buy another usb zip drive and load it from there. (that would be a waste of money, but...)

make sure you unzip the file, and then just copy the BIN file onto the floppy.

did you format cf in mpc??

what size is your cf card??

I have 2 CF card... both formatted... one Dan-elec 1gb and one Sandisk II 1 gb. As far as the OS goes... yepa. I have unzipped and copied the BIN file... no luck. I'm guessing... maybe it's the floppy brand (Verbatim) that's causing some kind of incompability...

He is not at the point of even trying to use his CF drive yet, quit telling him to format his flash cards!



Floppy disks are notoriously garbage, make sure you have no speakers or magnets around where you're trying to get this done. Also try a bunch of different floppy disks, i had a box of 10 before that had 7 bad ones in it.

ALSO try and replace the floppy drive (atleast temporarily) with the one in yer PC to do the update.

REMEMBER the floppy cable on the MPC2000 is wired for FLOPPY B (before the twist) if you are using a regular computer floppy cable.

i would say that your floppy drive was damaging your floppies rather than 7 out of 10 were corupted.

that's what i normally would have figured as well except that it worked fine with every other old floppy i had, turns out around here all floppies in stores are back stock from years back most likely, who knows what kind of moisture/damage etc they've been through.

Ok guys... Im a bit frustrated now... I've tried different floppies and nothing! So... question is: Is anyone willing to send me a WORKING floppy or ZIP with OS 1.2... Im in London. Thanks a lot.

It's your floppy drive/cable

When I installed 1.20 on my MPC it would not recognise my internal ZIP250 drive so I had to go back to 1.14, the probelem was I could not find where I put my original floppy cable that came with the mpc, when I used a normal computer one it would not recognise the floppy drive and would just say the same thing as yours Type:??????
I found the cable later and was able to put it back to 1.14

As some one stated on here I think it has to do with this>

PS I live down in Kent if you are willing to travel (I dont drive)
