Agreed, and it was very cool that he did that test. Check out his beats on that site too, real classic east coast sound.

this is why you need a 12 bit source to sample from. or even an 8 bit source if you can find one. you would create your kit on your old sampler and then sample each hit into the mpc with old style pitching, filters, 12 bit sound, etc all intact. hell you could even put it through your mixing board to mix it just right! sample after all that and youll have a kit that not only sounds like it came from your beloved SP1200 or S950 or S700 or S612 or MIRAGE or EPS or STUDIO 440 or FZ1 or SK1 or RZ1 or gravis ultrasound or or or but is halfway mixed!

biatch with some sprinkles of magic there! nice to see u feeling the thread for real richness.....

it helps to get a copy of this gears' specs too, like my faves ARE the casio's , RZ1 SK1,5 etc, but its their filters that do the icing on the cake as far as sample rates go too....manuals for those details are invaluable.

ie: the SK i think is 8 bit, but has a 9k (approx, its not dead on 9k - i cant quite rem) aliasing filter, so if i wanna use a 'virtual SK' sample, its gonna be resampled at 8bit but certainly needs the chod aliasing filter to sound authentic. for my money, the RZ1 is awesome, and gives any hit extra 'clack'.

Are there any plugins out that do a good job of emulating 12bit sound (or converting it)? Ive been using my JJOS but interested in other options. Nym posted a free one up a while back but i dont think its available from that site anymore.

sorry but the much sought after 'authentic' 8 & 12 bit sound is so far inherent to systems made to those specs. youll need some old hardware. you see, you arent really looking for the pure 8/12 bit waveform, youre looking for the way 8/12 bit hardware handles the 8/12 bit sample data. youre looking for artifacts introduced by those systems. youll only be happy if you sample the analog output of these systems. after you do that however, the sky is the limit.

Thanks for breaking that down. I bought an s3000 which at the time i thought you could change the bit depth but i was wrong (you can change the sample rate). So for some of my drums i will sample into the mpc1k and convert to 12bit then dump them into the S3000. Might look into getting a 12bit fx pedal or something in the future. Im ok for now though.

hmm not sure i would do that in the mpc1000 for a 12 bit effect. get yourself an akai s612 sampler man, its silly cheap. im sure a pedal would be very cheap too.

also remember back in the day they could only sample from vinyl or tape and that everything was mixed on tape so all of that analog goodness is inherent in the sample. in other words, dont sample from cd or mp3, get it off of record or it will sound too polished for old school. many artists in the 80s and even 90s would make dub plates or find a used dictaphone to record to first and then grab the sample off of that. king tubbys fantastic dub productions are based on magnetic tape transfer and as a result have that awesome saturated sound, that richness that we are all missing from todays recordings i think.

I have the same question, since i've noticed that bit converted sounds don't change in their byte size at all -
the same sample converted from 16bit 44100 to 12bit 22050 should be much smaller!

so , what is JJOS Bit Convert for real : a true bitrate and sample rate convertion or just an emulation ?

Haha, that's what i thought

But than, how accurate this Bitcrusher/Bit Convert is and what's the algorythm based on - JJ's " by ear " subjective home bitcrashing?

wish he ( The Allmighty) would try to implement the true sample accurate bitrate convertion and a lower 12 bit sampling rate srtaight out of the box ....

You need a sample and hold circuit, an oscilator and a schmidt trigger. Then you can build a samplefrequency converter yourself. Pretty easy to do ;-)

an Oscilatooor a Schhhmidt trigger... hmmmm, sounds interesting..
any links to DIY tutorials?

No links sorry, but it's rally easy to make yourself ;-). OR search decimator, downgrade & bitrman.
