Anybody noticed that the timing inside the MPC1000 is not tight.
Program a 16th hihat and you'll hear it's slightly delays every now and then.
Record a couple of other sounds together on one point and then listen to the 16th hihat solo on your mixer and you'll hear it hops and skips (like a shuffle) at the moment the other sounds are triggered.
It's kind of a shame since the MPC series was famous for it's impeccable timing.
I had a MPC2000 before and as far as i know the timing was tight even if you'd trigger 32 sounds.
I doubt this can be fixed with a software update.

I just did what u said with the 16th hi hats and seems tight to me... or at least its so small its inaudible to my ears (in which case i aint bothered by it)..

are you samples trimmed to point.

this makes a big difference.

also use some decay.

This sounds exactly like the kind of thing that often can be fixed with a software update.

Does the problem go away if you record the hihats first or if you put the hihat on pad 1?

also...is there any swing applied ?
that'll alter the timing.

Absolutely. When programming drums, hi hats, etc. do it with swing at 50% first. Then you can adjust the swing timing after that.

No, it has nothing to do with sample start trimming, also not with swing.
Straight 16th hihats are just not straight.
The MPC1000 can play 32 notes simultaneously but if you play about 10 sounds at once and listen the hihats (or any other clear/short sound) you'll hear a hick-up at the moment many other sounds are triggered (and i'm not even talking about 32 sounds yet).
Put the hihat on one channel on your mixer and the other sounds on another channel so you can easily turn them down and focus on the hihat.
This is NOT the famous MPC timing we know from the older machines. It reacts like my other sampler does when i trigger it from the MPC but the internal sounds were always tight cause there was no real midi communication involved, just some internal triggering.
I've had a MPC2000 before and it was tighter, no irregular timming.

im not quite sure about the last hat, however i seemed to notice a difference in the timing when i switched from 2k to 1k too. i've gotten past it at this point (usually using 54% swing) but i could still notice the slight difference in timing

That's very interesting!! :?

So are saying that the timing feels like the internal sounds are being triggered along a regular midi bus?
Is this true???

I don't know...I just tried doing what you said(i probably had way more than 10 sounds at once) and my timing(knock on wood) seemed good.

I'm gonna keep testing and post back, though.

As for differences between the various MPCs, this is my first, so no help there either....

Sorry dood.. :?

why do we always look for the bad things about somethin?

By jigginz Sat Jul 10, 2004 9:29 pm
Anyone know the real deal on this??
Why are so many poeple saying that the old Mpc's are tighter, have Akai cut corners on this?

Id not usually post up on this type topic.
But Ive owned and been around this series (MPC) for nearly a decade... I, nor anyone I know (that have been exposed to the MPC much as well) have even begun to notice a difference..3000, 2000, 2000xl.... record both the audio and midi out put along sind each other, make an easy sequence that you can load into each sample... load a click sample that "looks good"(really hard attack...and easy to see) into multiple mpcs and record them all... you can look at the fargin Clicks and see.. and you can compare the midi note data too... and by the time your done, I'll have made 2 beats.

how do you guys find time to make tracks?

Ive gotten caught up in this argument before...except then it was the 2000xl that wa cutting corners ....and I saw the abovbe test done with the 3k, the 2k and the 2kxl.

it is the same....at least at 50%... there may be a slight difference in swing ratios in the machine but ***** me ...if your that refined then just turn offthe damn quantize and work on your rythm.

btw: Instead of quantizing at 50% and then using different swingz for each bit start with no quantize and pull what sticks out as bad withe vari-swing quantize mehtod.. I usually end up with about half the beat staying "live" with some bits anchored into the swing.

ok, you got me curious....what is the "vari-swing quantize method"?

It sounds cool....

are u sure u have timing on? it would then move the notes to the nearest 1/16 note in that setting. I have used the 1k and there is no diff at all. Get better rhythm or turn it to "timing" to off.
