You need to record your hi-hats man! You cant just set the swing the 75% and then press the hi-hat pad and expect to hear it.... It effects whats recorded not what your playing with your fingers.

Lets try again....

1) Load a Hi-Hat to say pad a1
2) On track 1, record a hi hat(tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick)
3) Open the T.C. Window for Track1 and change the swing on your 8th notes to 60% or so and press FIX.
4) Play back what you've recorded and you will definitely notice the swing applied.

Heres some examples of what no swing sounds like and what swing sounds like:

NO SWING: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e ... raight.mid
LIGHT SWING: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e ... etween.mid
MEDIUM SWING: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e ... e_feel.mid
HEAVY SWING: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e ... eighth.mid

If you don't know about musical theory or anything, I highly suggest you learn.

Basically swing = triplets, triplets = 8(3) to count you would use. 1 trip let, 2 trip let, 3 trip let, 4 trip let(notice each note has 3 parts? thats triplets! What a concept right?)

The swing function doesn't necessarily quantize to triplets but more or less puts a percent of swing so that it has a more natural feeling than perfectly quantized.

A good example of 8th note swing is a shuffle grove, check out Led Zeppelins - Fool in the Rain, the hi-hat pattern throughout the song is swung(played in triplets). Check out an audio sample here at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fool_in_the_rain

Also most Jazz is played swung(again meaning its played in triplets). Listen to the ride pattern on any standard Jazz tune and you will hear the swing placed on the ride.

Heres some basic knowledge on music theroy:

For a quick learning curve experience, do this:

  1. Assign Swing to a Q-Link Slider
  2. Assign a closed Hi-Hat to a Pad
  3. Set the timing lets say 1/8th or 1/16, your choice...
  4. Hold Note Repeat and the Pad with the Hi-Hat
  5. You hear the hihat getting played back
  6. Now Move the Q-Link slider where the swing is assigned to up or down, while still playing back the hihat - you need both hands for this...
  7. You should instantly hear the changes and what swing does
  8. find a groove, you like, record it and continue with the kicks and snares

Have Fun!!!

read my signature. thats a direct quote from a black man in the hood in the states. thats what they think of you man.

i personally think that white people do follow suit and it can be sad. so i will have nothing to do with hip hop. i dont even listen because its all about black power. whitey can try to make hip hop but it only comes off as silly. most white people have no need to complain really, so what are they gonna rap about? ive had enough of bad attitudes in return for my appreciation. fvck em i say.

i see wat you mean but please... **** any kind of race superior thinking man.... maybe open your mind to other(traditionaly) black music such as reggae dub

the massage is clearly that color is not what matters and is not a boundary... i can understand some of the black power statement of course.... different history... as well as i can understand the black power behind reagge dub and Ras Tafar I

that the african population has (not to generalize it) a lot (more) rythm and musically nature in em is not deniable, do you agree? but there always were great musicians of any kind of color...

but the music i listen to usualy dont preach any superiority of black, it tells us to get the F up an UNITE!

i ll concentrate on my mpc issues now

ok the description by stan did it for me to getting the point

and tanks to JayP for teh great learning resource!

i have a few other problems now actually

i dont know i guess because of the system reset, my sensitivity settings and all are changed

i have the VOL on max. and sensitivity set to max (25) as well, but i have to HAMMER the thing to hear nearly a full sound..... before, doing that with MAX. Vol would have fried my ears!!!

and i can only hear like that through the phones jack now.... phones connected to ST Out is even with everything on MAX extremly silent

like i said i was allready in the Sensitivy window and maxed it there too

wtf is wrong now????

+ also since the system reset: usualy i was asked directly to what pad i want to assign a sample WHEN LOADING from hard disk........ now it just pulls em into the memory without asking

again wtf? :(

damn i how can i get it back to work like it used to?
