why does the os for mpc 60 cost so much?

i noticed in the for sale forum that os 3.10 for the 60 is a couple hundred bucks...

whats the deal with that? is it like a private release or something?

Yes it was done by Roger Linn himself due to demand for it at the time. Its not expensive at all when you look at the functionality it adds to the machine. 3.10 supercharges the 60 and basically turns it into a different piece. Its well worth the money.

In the simplist terms in makes your MPC-60 as close to a 3000 as possible, plus allows you to add the optional SCSI interface.
Adding the R. Linn update and Marion hardware made my old MPC-60II a real heavy hitter.
The only drawback was that the 60's have those dying displays that make you wanna attach a light to your head, and you have to partition the drives that you use with the SCSI.
If you like the sound of the 60 and don't use the sample dump on it then the update is worth it.
Best part about when I order mine was that I actually got to kick it with Roger Linn on the phone for a minute.
This was like 98' I think.

I guess its cause Linn has an in with the 60 and he can get the specs (?), cause that got me hype thinking about being able to make custom OS'es for other MPC's.

cause as for me, i have a 2000 and they're obviously not into tweaking the os anymore . . .

It would be impossible to sell a 2000 OS for that much because anyone can copy the floppy and pirate it. The 60 has it on EPROMS which are chips that you need to replace in the machine and that you can't copy.

But as a public service one could do it, it would be tough. Some People were petitioning for it and the people who could actually pull it off said it wouldn't be worth their while because of the copying.

I saw the mpc 1000, man, they sure dont make them like they used to. The 60 is a steel tank, the 1000 is like a remote control car(no disrespect)

Remember the MPC-60II had a plastic case to reduce manufacturing cost, not the cheapest plastic but plastic none the less.

Still, the 60II is still a tank.

The 1000 seems more solid than the 2k & XL, just the cheapo knobs ruin the look.

The only real thing I hated about my 60II was that one day you will lose your backlighting and having to partition something as small as a ZIP disk.
Funny look at all the stuff on the 60II that became an option for later MPC's, the 60/60II MPC's were built for professional use.
Newer MPC's while being functional and cost effective are built for marketing and profits.
The cheapo knobs was another way they tried to make the 1000 more durable for carrying around since they are flat and less likely to snag.
I just wish the MPC-2000xl had the MPC-2000's jog/shuttle wheel, it makes working a lot quicker and feels better.
