Talk and share knowledge on rare records, sources of new samples, vinyl, diggin, etc

honestly the thing that makes me so sad about this thread is all the hoobla about "breaking even" and "making profit"

if thats why your in it, i myself am really glad you don't rep an mpc, cause that is just weak.....

also i'm 19, i know very very little about old music, so i don't know what is gonna have dope sounds, i just go and i dig, and if a record looks dope, i buy it, and i usually find something dope.

Exactly what I was thinking ^^^

It's not sacrilege to make money while doing something...it doesn't make you any less "real" or mean that you don't love the music! If you can find someone who wants to buy your music for a project, by all means do if it feels right!

First off, to poundaproblem, ssnedden, jdavidson, mr_debauch, Ill-Green, and everyone else who spoke up defending vinyl - thank you. It's nice to know our kind still exists.

To re-state my point once more - I am NOT anti-mp3, or anti-technology. You can sample whatever you want, like I said before - I don't care...

I AM upset about peeps coming into the crate-diggers thread and crapping on vinyl and posting 5843X about why they don't use vinyl, don't need vinyl, it's haterism, etc.

KidQuan - I kinda feel bad for you because you unknowingly walked into a situation that you didn't fully know about - that being all the vinyl haters in the crate digging section - and perhaps now that some of those threads have re-surfaced - you will begin to understand why some of us are so salty about this issue...

jpeg - please do us a favour and change your screen name to mp3. If you can't do that, then please don't post anymore about why mp3's are better, why you don't use vinyl, and how everything has been sampled anyways...We all know where you stand on this issue, and unless you are bringing something new and/or important to the table - don't bother. Thanks in advance.

ssnedden - you are right - it's not an age thing. I know you are a younger cat, but it is very refreshing to see dudes like you come up in the game. Dudes who respect the artform and culture, dudes who still dig in real crates, and dudes who ask others if/when they need help - instead of going on like they know everything already...Peeps like you help me to understand for every clown out there - there is a dude holding it down the right way...

poundaproblem - thanks for your support in this thread. I totally understand the frustration you feel sometimes when it seems like the youger generation want everything right away without giving anything back - or paying the dues - or putting in the work. I'm not sure some of these younger cats fully understand how much work is involved in digging - multiple spots daily - just to find nothing - or in building your own studio from scratch - I know you do!!! lol - or in how hard it used to be to find hip hop records in the late 80's - let alone info on records that were being sampled, etc. I sometimes also feel that some members of the younger crowd (some, not all) - really take everything they have at their fingertips for granted...

As for beats - KidQuan you can check my myspace in my signature, or head on over to cratekings to download my beat tape. Which incidentally was made using real records that I found while out digging in real crates (mostly dollar bins too, jpeg...)
here's the link:

Oh and by the way: anytime KidQuan or jpeg want to post some beats, I'm all ears...

uh, guess thats supposed to be ur sarcasm thinking i push wack shit
well i dont got much to defend right now except the very first 2 beats ive ever made on my cheasy axiom 25
http://www.soundclick.com/burntmapbeats (the microphone tags **** up the songs + soundclick diminishes quality of regular uploaders who dont pay for vip)

and i listened 2 all ur tracks on bollyhood, i like thai but the voices are hella annoying
also, i really could not find a difference in quality from your sampled vinyl quality from the joints I sampled that were originally a .mp3, converted to .flv, converted back to .mp3 and then converted to an improved .wav

and its not my speakers as I went to pounddaproblem's myspace and the sound quality of his beats sound very good

again, im not trying to shit on vinyl
i was just stating my reasons why I dont use it and how its benefited me so far
im a technology inclined person, so reason, recycle + my lifestyle flow PERFECT together
since I know i am kinda lazy, I like things to easily adapt to things, i like music and making beats, im cheap, and i **** LOVE computers

you most likely have way better income than me, have ur own place so space isnt a virtue, better equipment, have more money to blow on buying random records, and dont have people who'll complain about loud music to stop your from producing so your work flow is way better than mines. (this is just my assumption)

I got my limitations, And my setup is the best way for me to work around so I can do what I gotta do.

Sound Quality = Vinyl
Versatility = MP3
to the untrained ear (The "General" Consumer) will definately not know the difference if you got ur EQ skills up (which im working on)

and its simple as that.

oh no homie, don't get me wrong at all, i would love to make money off music, i make cheese off my art here and there and i don't mind. What i was saying is if your doing it, purely for a profit and thats why you got into it, then thats wack, period.

i sample vinyl and mp3's i get more rare sample worthy material on-line from blogs so i mess with that now, so dont take my word the wrong way.

i love vinyl but i aint gonna shit on mp3s the quality is good and im getting shit that was beyond my price range when i was out doing the leg work

To be honest,

there might not be a huge difference in quality listening to myspace or a 128kbit mp3...

but next time you are playing live with a big 4 way PA system... compare a 128 mp3 to a wav file. At high power, all the unwanted sounds and parts of the tracks with low quality add up.

I used to like that rugged sound of vinyl clicks and pops occasionally looping with some samples and now I never have that because nothing sounds worse then a click or a pop being blasted at 100 watts through a big high range horn!
(And I get the feeling that some people actually manually add that in to their music to give more of a vinyl feel to it.)

ohh see thats the thing
my music isnt really that loud
which is probably why I dont hear much difference
Im saving for some KRK monitors, because thats all I see in beat makers videos
I heard some good things about m-audio av40 speakers but IDK, rarely see those things around anywhere
Cant really trust the reviews on amazon.com

No sarcasm intended. A few posts ago you asked to hear beats from those defending vinyl. I put mine out there. That is all.

Cool. I never said you would hear a sound quality difference with my beats. I was not one of the people who said vinyl sounds better than a wave file. The truth is as soon as you sample it (into a digital sampler - such as an mpc) it is no longer a pure analog signal anyway...
The vinyl I used was scuffed up thrift store finds. The clicks and pops are in my beats because thats how I like my beats - I didn't add any vinyl noise, but I didn't take any out either...Trust me, I will never be the dude bragging about how clean or clear my beats sound...ever...

Like you said, all assumptions on your part. I can tell you what isn't an assumption though. I didn't start off with all the gear I have now, or even all the records I have now - but I DID START FROM SCRATCH LIKE YOU - and I did start with vinyl... But I didn't go onto a web site and talk about getting paid for beats and post in a crate digger section and crap on vinyl at the same time. I also didn't backpedal after my intital post, and call out some dudes who caught feelings and stuck up for vinyl. I then didn't post my two soundclick beats and start to make assumptions about dudes after I got caught out there...I can guarantee I DIDN'T DO ANY OF THOSE THINGS...

Anyways, do you - sample whatever, get paid whatever - but just remember there are still people that take this vinyl thing very seriously - and if you don't want to get caught up in arguements with them, don't disrespect the culture in their zones - such as crate digging websites/forums - That is the only thing I have an issue with. Everything else is gravy...

It was ONE question. I asked has he broken even, Seriously I doubt many people invest 100s or 1000s of money in equipment just for the love of making music, especially in the times were in. I for one am starting making beats but if I said I had no intent in making money from it i'd be lying.

but how were my beats though, u aint even sayin if they were trash or not ?

And about me "backpedaling"
Since so many people were trying to get at me, I wanted to see if they were right or not
Still haven't really gotten a confirmation onto what is better
Most of the people just saying what is best for THEM, which just makes this a war on opinions rather than facts

Once again, Im just asking for someone to PROVE vinyl is way better than mp3, thats it.
I want someone to make me feel stupid with facts instead of just words.
Ive been googling "vinyl vs mp3" and the likes of that, but so far all ive read is that it has a more "earthy sound"

It's better because it exists in the physical realm. End of story.

KidQuan wrote:thats sarcasm.

Uhh, no it's not. It's only sarcasm if I have no intention of listening to your beats...

KidQuan wrote:Seriously I doubt many people invest 100s or 1000s of money in equipment just for the love of making music, especially in the times were in.

Believe it or not, some people do. To some music is still an art form, not a meal ticket or a paycheck. If you want to make money, music is probably the LAST place you would invest in, especially since the collapse of cd sales and the proliferation of downloading the last 8-9 years...

It's the internet. 90% of it is opinions rather than facts. I'm not sure how people are supposed to go about "proving" anything to anyone, especially you or jpeg...

KidQuan wrote:but how were my beats though, u aint even sayin if they were trash or not ?

I mean they weren't my style. But keep doing your thing though - for the love, not for the money. If you have the love, the money will follow...hopefully

ive been into hip hop since 92 pursuing beats since 99/2000 spent at least 5G's persuing my insterest that includes various samples beat machines, reading books, practicing the craft, studying interviews of producers to understand their process, and buying records, learning about artists, lables, going to record fairs and markets.

that was fun at the time but no im at a stage where my time is best spent on other things so ive streamlined my process to produce maxium output with less time invested hence i ve sold all miscellaneous equipment and got an mp1K shrunk my record collection down from 400 to about 80 (trading)

now i get better records on-line so its all good listening on a big sound system im sure the difference will be heard but the mp3's are good enuff for what i do.

i got some old beats up

www.myspace.com/jpegbeats

i aint claiming to be the best no where near but i got a desire to do it so i will and speak my opion, but it just so happens that big players like d.i.t.c and bink also find it acceptable to use mp3s i think they are more qualified then all of us so what they say regarding the use of blogs must carry some weight.

OooohKaaayy. That changes everything. The big names allow us to use mp3. I will burn all my records now and use mp3 instead
