Why? Because I got the XL for $100.00, and the 500 for $200.00. Cheap investments, you can always sell em later for more money..
Besides getting them for cheap prices, musically, the 2000XL and the 500 do nothing but collect dust.
I'd buy another MPC if I found it for a cheap price. :)

im with you..except i paid an extra $350.00 on top of what u paid for the xl,,but...i got my 500 for $75.00..
except one other thing..check this out..im an old schooler..so for some odd reason when i hear people talking about the different sound comming from each mpc,,,dude i can hear the warmth in the 2000xl,,it has that boom bap sound,,where as the 2500 has that more modern sound..and the 500..well that takes batteries so,,,cant beat that!!!
so i use all three
my wife goes to the gym daily and loves excercise music,,so i make a lot of high tempo mixes on the 2500 and i make my grimey style beats on the xl
and the 500 has been in more hotels than a prostitute..i love that thing!!
and like u said,,im constintly looking for a good deal on one and i'm sure i'll scoop if i find one!!

pace!! <<not a typo :D

kvmoore wrote:Yeah. I use two MPCs. Well actually, I have two separate setups. I have a 4k in my main studio. In my smaller setup, I have my 1k maxed out with latest JJOS, a MIDI keyboard and a couple of groovebox-type machines that I use as sound modules. I actually bought an MPC1000 about a year after it came out (the blue and red one) but it was very limited so I got rid of it and got the 4k. After I found out about the JJOS and hard drive upgrade options, I bought another 1k (this time a nice black one), and I'm keeping this one. As a result of the JJOS, the 1k is a killer MPC now and it's also portable.

While the 4k's a studio-only MPC, I sometimes take my 1k over to a friend's house and lay down a beat. I got the 1k not only for my second little setup, but also to serve as a backup MPC if the 4k ever breaks down. I hope that never happens though.

Now, the downside to having the MPC1k, 4k combination is the fact the programs and sequences are incompatible between the two machines. I have to use a third-party software to convert my MPC1k programs to use them in my MPC4k.

Other than that, I find it nice to have two separate MPC setups in two different environments with different external midi gear (soundsets). I tend to come up with different sounding beats in each setup.

I'm using 5 MPC's currently. A 60II, 3000, & 4000 in the studio. A 2000 & 3000 in my office that I travel with. I like the difference in the sound. I never look a things as overkill, but everything has to be compatible. That's why I won't f$ck with the 500, 1000, 2500, or 5000! The 4000 is a monster, so why bother with them anyway.
I will be giving my neice the MPC2000 for her 14th birthday. She is always in the studio on the 4K. She just wants her own MPC.

Never OVERKILL. It's called options. Dr. Dre had 5 MPC 3000's in the studio at the same time, so he could load what he needed in each unit. "It's better to have and not need, than to need and not have!"
