i think hes refering to: say i find a cool sample I like.....from Bach, or something-performed by the philadelphia symphony, well, ill flip the sample, but then instead of using the actuall sample, ill hire a musician, or "orchestra" to play the sample, then sample them, and use them the same way i did the sample....this way i can flip a sample and use it without having to pay royalties.
With royalties, you have to pay twice, one for the "arrangement" of the melody, and second for the recording of it. So basically the artist who created it, and the producer, or people who recorded it. BTW im no expert.
But anyways, the thing is, sometimes you can flip a sample so that no one can recognize the original arrangement of it, but what about the sound quality? thats where the recording royalties come in, if someone can notice the recording of it, whether its been fliped or not, you have to pay.
this is why the interpolate.
so drdre, might do a rough arrangement using samples from records, then when its all said and done, hell hire a musician to perform it, or play it, then record it.
or at least thats what i know, someone else chime in.
