But yeah....Low pass filters usually wont cut the mustard for phasing out drums. Bandpass filters and High pass filters work much better for that purpose.
As a side note - are 'hardware' mixers that do LPF, BPF etc any better than an mpc that offer the same thing ?
I don't have a lot of inputs - keyboard, iPod, mic so wasn't really looking to get a separate mixer, but if it did a better job of cutting out frequencies than my mpc I would reconsider for sure. Either that or I need a ton of practice in isolating drums, basslines etc.
But surely cutting a frequency out is the same however its done right ?
Im not sure what MPC your using, But I believe the 500 and the 1000 have LPF, BPF and HPF filters...I have the 2000XL and it only has a resonant LPF filter. So I process all my samples either in my microkorg or my ESX and than sample them into my MPC.
And yup, certain filters hit certain frequencies..A high pass filter with a bit of resonance can almost entirely silence all instruments in a sample and leave you with a clean "skeleton" of the sound..where you just here the upper highs and mids creating a kind of Tinny percussive sound perfect for mixing with other drums.
A BPF filter works just the same, but with more low end added in.
