I have a mpc2500 that I just bought.. I got it cheap, however it has a couple of issues..
One I posted about is crackling from the right out jack/headphone jack(right side), and a line out at the top of the LCD.

Its under warranty and I have gotten an RA number from akai to send it in and have it repaired on them.

WHich brings me to my question.

Im wondering whether I should get the jj osxl now or later since the password belongs to the product ID in the machine. If akai deems for whatever reason that my mpc needs to be replaced, or they have to replace the mainboard which I believe is where the product ID is stored at, then when I got it back after repair I would be forced to purchase an osxl password all over again.

on the other hand, if they just replace parts not related to the product ID, then buying the password now is no problem.

I just dont wanna pay 113 bucks twice.

Suggestions?

Thanks

No you better wait. Because if you pay for the OSXL now, you'll be paying for the password thats hardwired for you MPC now. If you then send your unit out to Akai and they mess around and swap out your main Circuit board or whatever, you'll have to pay for a new password.

And yeah, this is EXACTLY what I am afraid of yo..
i wasn't too excited about paying 113 for it to begin with, let alone the possibility of paying 226!

Why doesn't JJ have something in place for this? I know the first thing every one will say is "because people will figure out a way to scam around it" or something like that..
but ALL he needs to do is require proof of an Akai Service order that shows the main board was replaced in a 1000/2500 and he could then issue a new Password for the product ID on the new pcb for the SAME mpc.

Or just keep a record of his customer base and the date they purchased and the product they purchased for.
JJ is dope and has a sh*t ton of Pro's, but it is definitely not without CONS too.

Im still undecided tho.. :(

EDIT: are we for sure tho about what physical part inside the mpc has the product ID stored in it?
If I knew that for sure, and could rule out the possibility of that part being replaced, I would just buy JJosxl NOW.

if akai finds evidence that a 3rd party OS was ever installed on your machine (JJ OS) it will void your warranty & they will refuse to service your MPC. better to wait until you know that you for sure are going to keep the machine before installing JJ OS on it.

How can they tell if JJ was ever installed if they get it with their own OS on it?

a possible situation is if something on the MPC fries while you have JJ OS installed & you can't boot the mpc up again to remove it. if you send it in to akai, once they get it up & running again they will see the JJ OS on there.

also, os 2 & 2xl both come in 2 parts: one part is installed in the regular OS memory location & the other part of the OS is written into the part of the MPC memory that was previously used to store "permanent" samples - samples that will always be in the mpc memory every time you boot up (this is why you can't store samples in this permanent onboard memory in os 2 & 2xl like you can in OS 1 & the Akai os).

JJ did this as a hack to increase the amount of space available to store the OS so it could have more features. so before you send your MPC to akai for service you would have to remove the os from both of these locations. i think there is a way to do it, but it takes a little more work & knowledge than just re-installing the akai os and sending the mpc back.

Has anyone ever reported a case of Akai not honoring the warranty?

i don't know. it's uncertain how strict akai is about this but i can imagine they are not the biggest fans of JJ OS.

there is probably more discussion of this over in the regular 'mpc1000' section of the forum.

I think you need to get your machine fixed asap, then get rollin' with XL once you get it back. It's worth waiting for anyway...

I was wondering about this. I bought an mpc because of the jjos so shouldn't akai be thanking him?!

They will give you a new password if your main board has to be replaced.

I've confirmed this with him
