MPC1000 Hard Drive Recommendations

I installed a Seagate Momentus 5400 80gb which came with the HDM-10 kit from Hip Hop Tools Inc. and my MPC1000 won't seem to register it. I followed the very minimal instructions carefully but when i'm done formatting the HD it still says Wave Free = 4.8mb. I downloaded the new OS and tried again, but still no luck. If anyone has had the same problem or can provide any help, it'd be much appreciated.

Can you hook it up to a PC and see how the drive is reported there?

it unfortunately says the same thing. it doesn't seem to recognize it at all.

I don't know if there are any horrible problems with doing so, but you could format the drive in Windows, make sure it's appearing properly there, and then see how it looks to the MPC. As it's just appearing as a mounted drive in Windows I can't imagine it'd cause any problems (beyond maybe having to format it again using the MPC) but it might be wise to check on that first. If it's any use my drive here is showing as a straightforward FAT32 volume.

thanks, unfortunately i don't own a windows based computer. luckily i contacted a rep. at Hip Hop Tools Inc. and they were happy to replace it for me and they also were kind enough to send me a 160g with no additional fee. i highly recommend this distributor!

sorry for this dumb question : do you prefer Hard drive or CF ?

I just bought a Kit for Hard drive, but I have now a doubt...

what are the reasons for which you prefer CF or Hard drive ?

Hey wutsup. Ive had my mpc for awhile and am a mad noob and am just getting back into it. A 2500 BTW. I just bought a INFINEON 256 MB 133Mhz SDRAM PC133 SODIMM 256MB 144 PIN For my RAM. My Questions are does that RAM look alright? AND, i know this will sound so stupid, but what the **** is the difference between the ram and the hard drive? now that im updating my RAM, Is that good enough? Why should i update my hard drive too? I know the ram allows you to sample more and have more memory so it doesnt say "insufficient memory" so you dont gota delete samples to make room. So what does the increased hard drive do? Can someone PLEASE clear this up for me in understandable english for a dumb noob like me to get. I bought the MPC BIBLE and had know idea id need all these upgrades to do what i want. And even though its suppose to be clear, He said it in a pretty confusing way. DO I NEED BOTH UPGRADES OR WHICH ONES IF NOT ? DAMMIT.... YOUR HELP IS GREATLY **** APPRECIATED. put simply the ammount of RAM is the amount of sample data you can hold in a track at one time, ie playing together if you want to be using 64 tracks. The hardrive or CF however will store the sample data you have like a library but isnt ideal to be reading sample data from on the fly in a composition.

Yeah, RAM is like short term memory, the HD is long term. Every time you turn off the MPC, the RAM is wiped.

Hey guys, before you all burn... i am very new at this and I am still learning about the MPC. I want to know what the hard drive can do for the MPC? Can i save my songs that ive made? oh and what about sounds, like samples, drums and what not? Im only looking to learn new things not get put down because of the fact that i dont know.

The hard drive acts like the memory card, only it's bigger and (unless you unscrew it the faceplate) it's not removable. Just like a normal computer hard drive you can save anything on to it (a buddy of mine used his 1000 to hold his secret porn stash - clever eh?), but in practice you'll only really want to it store files that the MPC can use. These can be audio files, like your samples (drums and whatnot) and you can save sequences/songs etc that you've recorded with your MPC. I think you can also save MIDI files onto it and import them into a sequence, although you might need JJOS for this (not sure though).

When you hook your MPC up to your computer, the drive that pops up is either the compact flash or the hard drive (or both I think if you're using both), so you can use this to transfer all of the above to and from the MPC.

So over all what would be the best HD to put in a MPC1000 Blue/Red.
I'm thinking of an 80GB HD.
Which one works the best with no problem's.
