Let me explain...

Still playing around with pattern mode on JJ OS 2 (and don't regret downgrading from 2 XL).

What I'd like to know is if there is any way to insert sounds by sample rather than just by chop.

Currently my workflow is to combine a snare, kick, hi hats etc into one sample and chop them up to use in a pattern. Fine.

The problem starts of course when I try to make another pattern for the bassline. I have several programs that use a mix of 2-3 bass samples combined with the tuning parameter to get a full bass instrument.

But I cannot see a way of using this program in a pattern, even though it would be perfect for it. The only way I see would be to combine the three samples in a sample and chop those up (not so bad) but then of course I cannot use the TUNE parameter as I have the parameter set to CHOP.

And of course - using the TUNE parameter instead would only work if I used the one sound (as opposed to the 3 or more).

So essentially - if anyone has any ideas on how to use pattern mode to get a bassline down quickly I'd appreciate hearing them.

Thanks

Mark

p.s. In program mode I can see the 'CHOP' parameter and was wondering if there is any sort of way I could auto-assign chops to a program, so that pad 1's sample was chop 1, pad 2 chop 2 etc. But not having to go in and manually do the chopping

pattern mode isn't really designed for instrumental lines like that. it's made for drum hits, which is why the mode is based on the method of programming old-school drum machines.

use pattern mode to program your beats. for the instrumental stuff, just program it in grid edit, or better yet - just play it realtime on the pads & record it that way.

also, this is a really weird and constricting way to use pattern mode.

keep those parts separate, 1 sound on each pad, and then use pattern mode to sequence each pad separately.

think of 1 pattern not as a complete beat, but as just the timing & velocity & tune information for one part of a beat. you mix and match different patterns for different sounds in your beat (kick, snare) and then when you get everything how you like you save the whole thing as a sequence.

it's cool that JJ put CHOP in pattern, but it's kind of a weird thing to have in there since we're usually talking about sequencing one-shots. in my opinion, it would have been better to put something else like ATTACK or FILTER instead of chop.

hmm ok thanks for the heads up. I did try that at first (different patterns for different sounds) but found that after combining the sounds I wanted into a sample and then chopping - I could work faster - of course there was the issue of not having 2 drum sounds play at once.

As a final point - do you know of a way I can auto-assign chops to a program, i.e. if I had a program of bass sounds over pads A1-A16 is there a way to instantly assign the A1 sound as chop 1, A2 sound as chop 2 etc.

thanks
