My opinion of the machine isn't swayed by the Kangz. If Roland made it, I'd think the same.

The people saying they don't need MIDI stuff, lots of tracks, or anything too advanced to make beats seem to forget how much this thing costs.

If all you need to do is what the Beat Thang does now, load up samples, make patterns easily by tapping pads that light up, then you can buy a SP-404SX for $400. If you need more MIDI stuff, so you can sequence a synth, throw in a MPC500 for $600. That's $1,000, like the Beat Thang.

What does the Thang do today that justifies that price? What can't the SP-404SX or MPC500 do? They all sample, use batteries, have pads, and FX. The Thang has pitch wheel. Okay, but the MPC500 has a pitch slider. It also has far more advanced software as of right now, allowing you to step edit, copy MIDI events, etc. The Beat Thang has built-in sounds. Is that worth $600?

The MPC500 also is smaller, boots faster, has less latency, and a screen that can be seen in sunlight. But the Thang is almost twice the price. It's up there with the MPC1000, which gives you JJ OS, more audio outs, more MIDI ins/outs. What's the difference making you choose a Thang over a MPC1000? You can load more samples, but if you don't even care there's only 16 tracks then why do you need more than 128MB worth of samples?

Some day, the Thang might blow the competition away. But they have a lot of work to do, and it's for sale now, the hardware supposedly shipping in 1 month. I don't even think they've produced any finalized units for beta testing yet. How can they possibly do that in less than a month and have a polished product ready to sell? The software itself isn't even out of beta stage, missing basic features, and crashing on many PCs.

It doesn't matter who made it, Roland, Akai, or Yamaha. The facts are the facts, and that is what we should base our judgment of the machine on. If people like the machine, and just don't want to support the Kangz because they don't like how they did things, that's their choice. But even if you like it, you must admit that right now the offering seems slim for the price they're asking. If you're getting on board now, it must be out of trust and hope.

But what do you base your trust and hope on? The Kangz are sub-contracting development to 3rd parties, not doing it in house. Do you know the details of their contract? What if the team keeps the source code, and their term ends in 6 months. Who is going to fix the bugs, the Kangz? How long do you expect them to keep working on this, adding features, 1 year? 2 years? 5? What if they can't even stay in business that long. We don't know much and they're new.

Plus they've already been busted violating 2 GPL licenses so far, using forum puppets, freaking out when things don't go their way, starting battles with potential customers, giving false/misleading information, and using shady marketing tactics, who knows what else we don't know about yet. Maybe the Kangz are really nice guys and fun to be around, but these facts don't scream confidence and trust in the future of their business. It sounds more like bankruptcy.

the thang aint perfect its in development but i can see a market for it, and for i wanna do its dope hence why i rate it but will remain to be seen how successful it is.

but if shit takes off and the software os develops i can see this being a dope machine if u aint got the vision to see its potential thats ur own short sightedness.

but ur comming off like an angry nerd still

 I touched a Kang nerve did I? Funny part is I agree with what your saying only difference is that it should be YOU that you're referencing. You're starting to resemble their chess kang I mean CEO...Put your emotions away homie and get to the point. These Kangs got your mind so messed up that you cant even spell Akai right

Look brosky...there have been countless opinions about this ninja turtle krang nonsense toy but the FACT is that they are unprofessional, they wont change, they are NOT the kangs you idolize so dearly.... You can ride them all you want. I'm sure you can use the $50 you'll get from the Kang sales team (minus the money you lose on refunds  ). But you should do more homework. I've owned so many different pieces of gear in my life.... I know a BS product when I see it. If you cant see it maybe you should log off and go cop some hardware...or maybe you've only used Fruity Loops and never touched real gear...either way..You are entitled to your beliefs about this "product" and I sure as Sh*t am entitled to mine. The difference is yours has a lot of emotion attached and mine is based on how bad they made themselves look.....At the end of the day as long as there is PUBLIC discussion on the MPC-Forums about this you can expect me to be very opinionated. If you dont like what I say, Foe me, log off or jump in front of an ice cream truck and chill out....

Look man, I'm not trying to be an ass. I've always thought you were an alright dude and you've contributed a hell of a lot more to this community than me - so you have my respect for that. But you aren't going to change a lot folks opinions here (including mine) about BKE tactics. That might happen later on if they get it together, but not now.

Let's just agree to disagree and move on. Just 'cause some of us like BKEs and some think they're douchebags doesn't mean we have to hate on each other.

On top of that, they attacked potential buyers, broke GPL, marketed before having a solid product, acted unprofessionally, ttacked potential RETAILERS, exposed their own marketing scheme, and basically did everything that goes against basic marketing tactics. As businessmen, they are failures, and I really hope im wrong about em. I hope the beat thang is the machine that **** out bangers, but I just dont see it with open-source infringement, viral marketing, and beta stage software.

Quoted for being spot on.

well the way i see it...

not looking at the beat kangz and only looking at the product... is this something we would like to see on the market? absolutely. no question about it. sure, they dont offer any new abilities... but they offer things we can already do in a different package. (well they might eventually offer if the beat thang ever comes out)

this product once it comes out will get the attention of other companies. it puts people like akai in a position to one up them. roland probably wont care because they make keyboards and the mv probably already has more features and effects then the beat thang... at least from what i have put together from all the info.

it adds a new face to the groovebox market. that is not a bad thing.

Unfortunately, the people here who are huge beat thang fans... those people who are tossing the "hater" card as a response to anyone who isn't a fan of what BKE is doing... well guess what?
you guys are fans of a product that is not even made yet. the software does not work properly.. okay granted, it has less bugs then the mpc5000... but it still cant even step sequence yet. I dont even know how they made the real time record without a step sequencer.

all the people who are saying "wait untill the update" .. I'm sorry to say this, but you guys got screwed. You shouldn't have to wait for an update in order for the software to fully function. Companies are not supposed to even release products and sell them if all the functions dont work. update... pfff, that is not an update, that is a new program.

"have faith" well i'm sorry, that is something that is earned by proof. For a company that had to release a shoddy piece of software written with bad code just so the public would trust that they really are going to release a product... that doesnt earn my faith.

Yes I am interested in what they will accomplish. I read all of this crap which proves I am interested.

But I hate the PR methods they use. I love viral marketing, I may be the only one that does... but I hate the way they do viral marketing. I hate how they lie right to our faces... especially when they tell us one thing, but the liscence agreeent says the complete opposite. Yeah true, liscence agreements are always subject to change... but who says they wont change it in a few months from now once people already started making beats and selling them?

the beat kangs are acting crooked. I wont pre-order anything from people who cant even include royalty free samples with their products. I wont pre-order anything from a company who cant even make a mini-battery 3 properly... what makes me believe they can make an entire OS for a piece of complex gear? Well that is why proof is needed... dont get stuck with something that useless untill an update comes out.

I learned my lesson from just blaze making it with the mpc5000... so if you cant even trust an already established company... why would you pre-order and dick ride a company who hasn't even made a single functional product yet?

AMEN to that!

However a lot of technology is moving like this these days, and we've been dealing with this for a LONG time as Akai customers.

It really sucks, but I guess that's what happens when things get increasingly more complex, and companies are trying to make products that appeal to everyone.

Oooooooookay- stop right there homeslice. Why on god's green earth should Pound have to "go back" on his opinion? Because his opinion is WRONG? It's an opinion! It can't be wrong! Why should he change his mind to appease you?

You also say:

BINGO! You hit the nail on the head with that one, slugger! Good Job! I too, can see a market for it...but why would you be SO upset and SO booty hurt that some of us AREN'T in that market? :?

You say you are providing facts...I have read none from you. You said that those that are "hating" are doing so because their egos are getting in the way- how the hell is that a fact? You are just talking out of your ass now... How could you possibly know why people don't like it, and better yet- if you could, why would you care?
