I was hoping for updated specs. Keep the hardware compatible with the 2500 so JJ OS will still run, but increase polyphony to at least 128, resolution to 960, bitrate to 24, RAM to 1GB, SD instead of CF, etc. Then only minor tweaks are needed to the OS, all the old stuff still works, and the MPC is closer to PC power.
Thing is, how much will AKAI
want this backward compatibility ? Its great for us as users to have a Frankenstein product (1 bit of hardware/custom software), sure, but we're talking about a possible new
official product. I can't see AKAI doing too much to keep that compatibility with the 1000/2500 in any future models.
Which is a shame - as frankly, there's no comparison between an mpc 1000 with JJOS 2XL/0S2 and an mpc 2500 with the standard OS. After a good few months of both, the former blows the latter out of the water. But without being pessimistic. I cannot see the JJOS traiil going any further than where it is. AKAI aren't going to release source code for the hell of it.
They'd be far more interested in trying to recoup money lost on the mpc 5000 and from what I can see - the combination of JJOS and a 2500 has been a factor in the mpc 5000 maybe not selling as well as it should. Let me put it another way - if it wasn't for JJOS I'd have bought a 5000 by now.
I'm not sure spending even more development time and resources on improving bitrate and resolution makes bussiness sense. Anything that brings it closer to PC power will just bring it closer to PC price...
Whereas I still see there is a market for a portable product with decent pads, an OS rewrite, decent (louder) output and a screen display bigger than an LCD watch.
Mark.
